Barbara Kay: What pit bull activism says about our culture
National Post ^ | Jan 2, 2015 | Barbara Kay

Last weekend in Saanich, B.C., a 16-day old baby was mauled by her family’s pit bull-Rottweiler mix on the same day as an elderly man was attacked by two pit bull dogs outside a Langley, B.C. dollar store. News like this is reported, but commentary-wise, dog-related public safety is virtually an orphan topic. Which is why I adopted it.

Public-safety regulation is usually linked to what is deemed a critical number of injuries or deaths. Between 1971 and 1980, for example, Ford produced three million Pintos. Due to a peculiarity in the Pinto’s structural design, its fuel tank was prone to puncture in rear-end collisions. Consequently, over Pinto’s 10 years in operation, 26 people died in fires that a better design could have prevented. Ford was forced to retire the model in the interest of public safety.

By coincidence, there are about three million pit bull type dogs in North America today, representing 6% of all breeds. But about 26 people die from pit bull type dogs in the U.S. every year (out of about 40 from all 400 breeds combined). Pit bull type dogs maul, maim, disfigure or dismember hundreds more. By no coincidence, when pit bulls were few in number — 200,00 before 1970, most clustered in marginal districts — dogbite-related fatalities in the general population were freakishly rare. In my youth, when middle-class neighbourhood dogs ran loose, and average families didn’t own fighting dogs, years went by without a single fatality. If pit bull type dogs were cars, they’d be long gone. But unlike car victims, pit bull tragedies don’t arouse public outrage.

Sorry, I’ve exhausted all the time set aside to deal with fanatical kooks for today.
Enjoy your ignorance.

After only the first round?

Well at least my other opponent didn’t resort to ad hominem attacks.

He was defeated, but didn’t just surrender.

Uh-oh, quick search yielded this 10-minute old story — another “hysterical anti-family pet” owner, in Maryland, getting mauled to death. I’m sure he must have been taking down the tree in a very provocative way!

They call them German Shedders.

And they have Doberdoodles, now.

Just shoot me.

Do you have any idea how many people are killed by horses and cattle each year?

Where’s the outrage?

This is a place of selective, cherry picked freedoms.

In the past two weeks in Frederick county, two people who comprise a small percentage of the population (a portion eerily similar to the percentage of pit type dogs) brutally slaughtered other people by repeatedly stabbing them to death.

Can we ban them, too?

If not, why not?

Dead is dead, after all and the murderers also possess “free will”.

I just did a google image search of “doberdoodle.” WHY would anyone want to do that?? I know, I know...because they can.

Bring on the sparkly collars and bows!

*shudder*

He was defeated, but didn’t just surrender.

I have nothing to gain by having an ass-kicking contest with a one-legged man.

I don’t have a problem for the most part with that take on it, unless you’re so inherently fearful of dogs you can’t tell the difference from one that is a slathering hell hound and one that’s friendly. One would need to be prepared to take the consequences of shooting someones dog on a whim that wasn’t an immediate threat.

FYI, I don’t have a dog now, and haven’t ever had one of these breeds. My rhetoric is on behalf of freedom and personal responsibility on this issue.

I also agree with most of his post but his description of "genetically rabid dogs" is worrisome
and reflects poorly on his ability to think and act rationally in this matter.

There are two meanings to 'rabid'.
One is, being infected with the disease of rabies.
To claim a dog or set of dogs is 'genetically rabid' is obviously absurd
and points to the poster as exhibiting the other defintion of 'rabid', that is,
"having or proceeding from an extreme or fanatical support of or belief in something".

My rhetoric is on behalf of freedom and personal responsibility on this issue.

8 hours old, enjoy!

Cohen says he got injured when he pulled a 10-week-old German shepherd puppy named Sirus out of a pit bull’s mouth — not once but three times....”The dog was going growling and shaking it…You couldn’t control this dog,” Cohen says.’

Also a new story posted today... .. You’ll be proud of this one!

“A police helicopter captured a pit bull attack on a California man Wednesday. “If they would’ve got me down, I could’ve got (sic) killed,” said Fresno man Hector Marroquin, who managed to call 911 while a pack of four pit bulls charged and bit him...”

A busy day for dog attack stories! Bon appetit!

“Macon lawyer Veronica Brinson and her son, Ryan Brinson, turned themselves in to the Bibb County Jail Thursday evening after three pit bulls allegedly got loose and attacked a couple and killed their dog on December 29th. Brinson said previously the dogs are her son’s....Lieutenant Randy Gonzalez with the Bibb County Sheriff’s office said both of them are charged with reckless conduct.”

You attribute the cause of a dog’s behavior to responsible or irresponsible ownership. While i agree that it can be a factor it fails to take into account that a dog does have a mind of its own. A well trained dog can do vicious and unintended things in the right circumstances.

No, a dog's behavior has its own motivations.

...a dog does have a mind of its own.

Right

A well trained dog can do vicious and unintended things in the right circumstances.

Right, and that is why it is of primary importance for the responsible owner
to be aware of and plan/act and control according to this knowledge.
