Hospitals and medical centers in western Colorado are limiting visitors because of a serious flu outbreak.

The Veterans Affairs Medical Center's community living center still is not accepting visitors after 11 patients showed signs of having the flu. All of those patients will remain in isolation until two or three days after the last one recovers.

The Centers for Disease Control said influenza has reached epidemic proportions. There have been 15 pediatric deaths nationwide

Live in western CO now and this has been a local news item since before Xmas. Had my flu shot in early November because I was traveling abroad later that month. Now we're told that this seasons flu shot is only minimally effective against the current strain. Showing my age, back in the late 1950’s the Asian flu epidemic made the rounds in north America ... I was down the better part of a week with it ... it was severe enough that I remember it well ... don't want a repeat.

The flu can be serious. Strains often mutate quickly.

Apparently, the 1918 flu pandemic lasted 2 years . It infected 500 million people across the world, including remote Pacific islands and the Arctic, killing over 50 million people.

My grandmother died as a result of this flu epidemic in late October 1918 ... just a couple of weeks before WWI ended on November 11 in Europe. She left behind a husband and two young children ... the oldest at five was my Dad.

My grandmother and mother lived through the period, but did not come down with it. My mother was only 7 in 1918, but the experience marked her for life.
