Time is overdue to repeal the Second Amendment
The Wisconsin Gazette ^ | December 28, 2014 | Tom H. Hastings

What country fetishizes, lionizes, valorizes, idolizes, and sacralizes guns as much as does our United States? OK, possibly Mozambique — the only country with an AK47 on its flag, but really, it's long past time to end this obsessive "My Precious" attachment of Americans to instruments of death.

This morning of Dec. 25, 2014, of the nine top stories from US Reuters, six were about shootings — four new ones and two about the national movement against shootings of citizens by police. This pandemic of sick violence, punctuated by mass killings of children, has gone on far, far too long. It is long past time to repeal the stupid Second Amendment.

The fate of the Second Amendment should have been sealed when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2008 that past rulings by their predecessors were wrong, that in fact the amendment that provided for a "well regulated militia" really guaranteed every individual the right to own a gun. Wow. That is an interesting reading of the English language. What the Supremes have done is to not only warp the meaning and make it into twisted law, but to further prohibit states and local governments from declaring their places free of legal guns. The conservative court once again rules against the power of states, a principle that used to be associated with darn liberals who wanted to make sure everyone had the right to vote, for example, even though they weren't properly white enough. Now when a city or state wants to outlaw firearms, too bad. The conservatives took away their powers and rights in favor of Big Brother.

The only logical path, given the clearly decided role of the Second Amendment, is to repeal it. American people are tired of mass shootings and police shootings and family feud shootings and sibling shootings and accidental toddler shootings and teen suicide by gun (highly popular). We are exhausted by the proliferation of death, of threats, of bloodshed, and by the NRA/gun industry moral garbage spewing forth every time someone challenges the ubiquity of guns.

Repeal the Stupid Second Amendment. Surround it, grab it, bring it in the back room, pull down the shades, and end it. OK, petition for it, get it on the ballot, and get it done by enough of the US populace, by enough people in enough states, to get it consigned to the dustbin of history.

I don’t know what everyones’ problem with this guy is. I’m thrilled that we finally have a Liberal who understands that gun control can only happen if the proper Constitutional mechanism to repeal the 2nd Amendment is followed.

What’s wrong with that? We should be giving this guy full credit, actually championing him, for understanding the Constitution and how it works, and not advocating for some slimey unconstitutional end-run that illegally circumvents the established amendment process.

As to the practical implications of what he proposes, I wish him the best of luck in getting the requisite 2/3rds majorites of both Houses of Congress and 3/4ths of the states to go along with his idea. He’ll need it ...

So the leftists aren’t really out to eliminate gun deaths. So what are they out to eliminate?

You and me.

"NO VIOLENCE" means no violence, Tommy boy.

I like that even better. And fencing off his house is an act of racism.

“It might be of interest to note that SWITZERLAND is not shown on this list, because it has...NO MURDER OCCURRENCE!”

Switzerland has multiple murders each and every year. Their murder rate (by firearm?) per 100,000 is 3.84 according to one lib outfit. http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/switzerland

.71 according to this outfit = http://www.nationmaster.com/country-info/stats/Crime/Murder-rate

In November, in one day, 4 people were murdered by someone with a firearm in Switzerland: http://news.yahoo.com/three-killed-shooting-near-swiss-alps-station-094001274.html

The sad thing is that taxpayers’ money funds this LIB degenerate who has no respect for Free Citizens. This guy is a malignancy. In a civilization without the freedoms we have, he would be crushed and discarded. He’s one very lucky LIB loser.

two about the national movement against shootings of citizens by police.

Yeah, fruitcake, getting rid of the 2nd A will fix that problem ... there weren't any "national movements" like that in Nazi Germany, were there?

Perhaps he needs to get far away from his nice warm & fuzzy protected environment and go visit some hostile places on the planet.
He would not then be so hasty in advocating helplessness.

Maybe if Wisconsin bordered Syria or Pakistan he would have a mature and realistic outlook.

Proof that common sense is not needed in order to portray a college professor.

All laws are enforced with the inherent threat of violence.
The gov’t, when it is legitimate, operates with the consent of the governed, who give it the authority to use violence to enforce the laws.

However, it is still the threat of violence that imposes the gov’t’s will on the governed.

It would make for a nice piece of fiction: a book about a post-2A repeal United States where the government battles its armed citizenry, prying gun after gun from cold hands, until there are no longer any armed authorities left prying guns.

True. What leads up to that is a far more interesting read. Matthew Bracken ('Travis McGee' on FR) wrote Enemies Foreign & Domestic. You should check it out. A very good read.

BTW, he sort of covered the scenario you outlined in his subsequent novels, Domestic Enemies: The Reconquista and Foreign Enemies & Traitors.

I actually have read his first book and was part of the way through his second but stopped mid way through as I just got too despondent with the thought. I have them all on the wife’s kindle. Maybe I should re-join that series. I honestly did think of his books when I posted my comment.

The good professor is also completely ignorant of how an amendment is repealed. But, then again, liberals and leftists have very little regard for law and process unless it suits their agendas.

Perhaps if he didn’t braid his ponytail so tightly, he would realize this. Of course, there is no chance that he will do either.

God gave me the right to defend myself, my family, my freedom. It is a sacred responsibility that acknowledges the sanctity of life.

Whether there is an amendment or not.

One look at this weasel tells me he would be a better fit for a socialist extermination camp than a “Peace” professor.

He probably thinks Obama need only pick up his pen & voila! Second Amendment gone, just like that!

“...The people in ISIL are not a “cancer,” as President Obama claims. The massive and multifaceted global public health problem is violence, which shares characteristics with many diseases, such as cancer, meth addiction, the Black Death and Ebola. Violence is the disease, not the cure...”

I’d argue differently. Violence isn’t the disease, it’s a symptom of systemic or personal failings. Example: A society (parents, schools, etc.) that fail to teach citizen roles and responsibilities in our civil society.
