POPE: UN MUST FIGHT 'GLOBAL WARMING'
the guardian ^ | 12/27/14 | j vidal

He has been called the “superman pope”, and it would be hard to deny that Pope Francis has had a good December. Cited by President Barack Obama as a key player in the thawing relations between the US and Cuba, the Argentinian pontiff followed that by lecturing his cardinals on the need to clean up Vatican politics. But can Francis achieve a feat that has so far eluded secular powers and inspire decisive action on climate change?

It looks as if he will give it a go. In 2015, the pope will issue a lengthy message on the subject to the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics, give an address to the UN general assembly and call a summit of the world’s main religions.

The reason for such frenetic activity, says Bishop Marcelo Sorondo, chancellor of the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy of Sciences, is the pope’s wish to directly influence next year’s crucial UN climate meeting in Paris, when countries will try to conclude 20 years of fraught negotiations with a universal commitment to reduce emissions.

“Our academics supported the pope’s initiative to influence next year’s crucial decisions,” Sorondo told Cafod, the Catholic development agency, at a meeting in London. “The idea is to convene a meeting with leaders of the main religions to make all people aware of the state of our climate and the tragedy of social exclusion.”

Following a visit in March to Tacloban, the Philippine city devastated in 2012 by typhoon Haiyan, the pope will publish a rare encyclical on climate change and human ecology. Urging all Catholics to take action on moral and scientific grounds, the document will be sent to the world’s 5,000 Catholic bishops and 400,000 priests, who will distribute it to parishioners.

If he is really saying this, and it’s not a media distortion, I wonder who got to him.

Wasting resources on global warming hits the poor and lower class the hardest.

If this crap keeps up, you will someday soon pay a rate for your heat and A/C which will be determined by your income and assets. The poor will pay little or nothing, and the producers will pay for everyone else.

The answer to the question “Is the pope Catholic?” is no longer the obvious one.

Damn, ain't that the sad truth. One would think he could see what happened to his own country of Argentina by implementing similar policies. It was one of the 10 richest countries in the world in 1901. It was a near basket case a century later.

Most Catholic men are addicted to porn? Wow, that’s a new one on me.

How about the Protestant denominations who are spending most of their time clapping happily during gay “marriage” and putting lesbian women in as their pastors?

Get real.

Anybody who leaves the Catholic Church because the Pope said something stupid, is an idiot. I will continue to concentrate on the body and blood of Christ and not worry about non-ex cathedra statements of this Pope (if he even said it).

"These guys would burn people at the stake if you thought the Earth was not flat!!!"

Jesuits? The Jesuits are the intellectual aristocracy of the Church. (Which doesn't preclude the Society from containing a lot of leftists, but they are certainly not troglodytes.)

As one who is raised a Catholic (before the church left me), I state that the pope is an idiot.

Yep. They're pushing me further and further away.

[sigh].....some of us Catholics still do have faith that God is actually in control of these things.

your phrase ex cathedra is a rationalization. He is always Pope even when making Biden like statements

You, of course, don’t know what you are talking about. I’ll wait until Rush Limbaugh straightens this out (or doesn’t). I’m not counting on you for truth.

Well, gee whiz. Consider your last ping ignored, then. If you folks didn’t post Romanist error, there would be no need to correct the record and attempt to help the victims of Rome.

Otherwise known as Questions No Reporter Is Allowed to Ask.

Also:

What is the temperature of the Earth?

What was it fifteen years ago?

The Pope has obviously not even asked himself these questions, which means he’s not merely ignorant; he’s intellectually dishonest.

So ‘Fran’ is apparently on drugs?

He’ll make an excellent ‘False Prophet’ to assist bonny prince Chuck in leading the world to the gates of hell.

What “warming trends?”

We’re 80 years into a continuous decline in global temps.

I see you are making the ever-popular argument:

P: “Catholics worship Mary and think the Pope in infallible whenever he opens his mouth.”

C: “Catholics don’t worship Mary and don’t believe the Pope is infallible whenever he opens his mouth.”

P: “Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do!”

“...perhaps ex cathedra...”

Puhleeeeze. You will never be taken seriously by any Catholic as long as you insist on making preposterous statements like that. A press release from the Vatican is not “ex cathedra.”

If you want to read a couple of REAL “ex cathedra” statements, read the two encyclicals on the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption, from 1854 and 1950.

It seems you like to make the old standby argument:

P: “Catholics worship Mary and think the Pope in infallible whenever he opens his mouth.”

C: “Catholics don’t worship Mary and don’t believe the Pope is infallible whenever he opens his mouth.”

P: “Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do! Yes, you do!”
