How He and His Cronies Stole Russia (Putin)
New York Review of Books ^ | Anne Applebaum

Posted on 12/27/2014 1:47:27 PM PST by Bubba Ho-Tep

For twenty years now, the Western politicians, journalists, businessmen, and academics who observe and describe the post-Soviet evolution of Russia have almost all followed the same narrative. We begin with the assumption that the Soviet Union ended in 1991, when Mikhail Gorbachev handed over power to Boris Yeltsin and Russia, Ukraine, and the rest of the Soviet republics became independent states. We continue with an account of the early 1990s, an era of “reform,” when some Russian leaders tried to create a democratic political system and a liberal capitalist economy. We follow the trials and tribulations of the reformers, analyze the attempts at privatization, discuss the ebb and flow of political parties and the growth and decline of an independent media.

Mostly we agree that those reforms failed, and sometimes we blame ourselves for those failures: we gave the wrong advice, we sent naive Harvard economists who should have known better, we didn’t have a Marshall Plan. Sometimes we blame the Russians: the economists didn’t follow our advice, the public was apathetic, President Yeltsin was indecisive, then drunk, then ill. Sometimes we hope that reforms will return, as many believed they might during the short reign of President Dmitry Medvedev.

Whatever their conclusion, almost all of these analysts seek an explanation in the reform process itself, asking whether it was effective, or whether it was flawed, or whether it could have been designed differently. But what if it never mattered at all? What if it made no difference which mistakes were made, which privatization plans were sidetracked, which piece of advice was not followed? What if “reform” was never the most important story of the past twenty years in Russia at all?

Concur. This article is a must-read for all FReepers, mainly because it's not just about what Putin did to become the Crime King of the New Soviet State, but about what he deals in and what his ambitions are. Even if he dies soon for some reason, like Hugo Chavez, the re-Kremlinized Russia will be extremely difficult to deal with because of the things he's done, documented by this author from other sources, and things he's organized and put in play, like the international criminal relationships he's founded with very nasty customers.

There are, moreover, three or four creepy parallels in Putin's M. O. w/ what The Impostor is doing. So when does The_Resident brief and debrief with his KGB goon mentors? When do people on the Right start getting visits from the Goon Squad? Or just going for a walk and turning up dead?

"More flexibility after the election"..... Sounds both ominous and prophetic now. What does it say about Obama's relationship with Putin and his field management team?

Netroots/RatRoots? How about RedRoots? We've all seen the Russian trolls right here on FR; I can only imagine what they're doing over on Dummies.

They make it sound like this is something new in Russia...just as all the antics happening in Ukraine’s elections....

Sheesh...the winner will always put his own people in place. Ukraine’s replaced the old Oligarchs with the new, Putin switched his out, Obama switched to his...that’s just how it plays.

Additionally Russian and Ukrainian politics are never remotely done as we do here...they are viscious and play to win regardless. We see it as “brutal” they see it as normal. politics.

Do you think people just might be understanding that corruption and brutal business is the status quo for all government politics today? The stakes on the International Stage are far greater today for the end result they are looking forward to.

Governments are thugograccies today...just some hide it better than others and cover up differently.

Perfectly. It's creepy that way. And the thought that a goon and troll like Putin could run a ringer into our White House is so repugnant that a lot of people refuse to believe it and scoff at anyone who asks pointed questions about The Impostor.

That is why history is essential. It records that, once upon a time, two utterly disgusting human beings became Pope: Innocent III and Julian II (Borgia). Back-to-back. What are the odds?

So that is three times in one post you gave us the argumentum ex "no biggie" bushwah, guess the people who warned everybody about Adolf Hitler were all wet, too?

Yeah, aren't these people who get all worked up about Mongols and Turks and Huns and Nazis a hoot? They'll never learn, but at least they're entertaining. Chill, dudes! </s>

Well as I see it as long as leaders continue to move forward with the Global Agenda they will also continue to take out any leadership which will not play in that game. They've done just that so far with any leader who has refused to play. Russia just happens to be the next on the list...and eventually China...

Speaking of Hilter as you did ....

These dlightful little fellows were Inside Ukraine's New Interior Ministry. .... but of course we must remember there are no fascists in Ukraine and its all Russia propaganda

.....”Putins rise can be also seen as just the exploits of an opportunist who also understood the game and moved when he saw an opening”.......

Sure he did,...and brought with him all those along the way who helped and wanted to see the changes Putin wanted to make.

They’re all gangster types in Russia and Ukraine, and other nations as well. We just usually bu the “we want freedom” line they get out there to rile the epople, though of course the people generally really do want that.

Did you take a look at the austerity Ukrainians are now going to be under...and of course they’re protesting against these already.

Putin however, still retains the peoples support. What he has to curb are those sent by the west who have infilitrated Russia and trying to organize groups to overthrow him. They began setting up as Ukraine fell...I followed them for a time On Twitter....interesting to see how they were going about it and who they were in contact with to fund them.

Who does this fit around here?
Today’s Russian “political technologists” make use of their state-owned media, including English-language outlets such as the TV news channel Russia Today; armies of paid social media “trolls” who post on newspaper comment pages, as well as on Twitter, Facebook, and other sites

Just what I thought when I read it. Makes me wonder more loudly what exactly Andrew Breitbart died of, too.

You may be personally involved in Ukraine’s plight..that does not give you the right to use a filthy mouth on FR. because someone points to what is going on there you don’t want known or prefer to deny.

As any other nation that goes through transitions there will be problems. Ukraine isn’t going to be exempt from that...and denial of what’s going on doesn’t help the situation when the people are attempting to stabilize their nation.

this is the story of the obola America...the rich elites have stolen from our pocketbooks, and stolen our heritage...

now they will not defend our borders, and our country is not our country anymore, all this by design....

and yes, the rules and regulations are only so they can always have an ace in the hole to harass, charge, intimidate, incarcerate its enemies...

well my sil had this Che magnet on his refrigerator, and I loathe Che but it made some sense if he indeed said it....”murderous leaders are removed to be replaced with leaders who become murderous”....that’s as close as I can remember.....coming from Che, he had a lot of nerve to talk about murder...
