Beavers And Climate Change
WFMY News 2 ^ | December 22, 2014

Posted on 12/22/2014 3:46:57 PM PST by Oldeconomybuyer

Researchers at EurekAlert say that our efforts to protect the beaver from extinction have had eco-unfriendly side effects. Beaver’s numbers have rebounded thanks to efforts across the globe to protect them. The new research states that as their numbers rise they are contributing to climate change.

Beavers create dams in shallow ponds, which then can host increasing levels of carbon as biological material accumulates on the pond floor. This accumulation results in methane, a greenhouse gas that does not dissolve in the pond, but instead enters the atmosphere. The study shows that today beaver ponds release 200 times more methane than they did in 1900, a time period when hunting threatened the animal’s existence.

The latest study points to beavers being contributors to climate change while the older study shows that beavers are ‘squirreling away our carbon log by log.’

It will take more time and more research to figure out the beaver’s true role in our ecosystem.

Eat a beaver, save a tree. Yeah!

Sometimes it pays to knock the dust off a big, fat beaver
joke and run it up the old flag pole, eh ya hosers.

Coincidentally, today would have been Barbara Billingsley’s 99th birthday.

Mrs. Cleaver always sported a proper pearl necklace on every show.

Not many women had the fortitude to do that every week in the 50’s.

Not just ZZ’s pearl necklace. June vacuumed the floor wearing high heels.
And that reminds me.
The first beaver I saw gave me a start. A real start, yes sir.
I turned this corner, and there it was: big as life slapping the water, buck-toothed, angry, ready to go.

This restaurant is about 15 miles away and is actually very good. They have their own home made Gravloxs and Aquavit.

They were recently named: "Worst Named Restaurant in the valley"

Reminds me of an episode of Bizarre Foods, where Andrew Zimmern visits a reservation in northern Maine. In keeping with their traditions, beaver meat is an important staple with this tribe. Since it's not too far from the Boston area and Liz "Fauxcahontas" Warren claims to have significant Native American lineage in her DNA, does Dizzy Miss Lizzy eat beaver? Not insinuatin' nuttin' Just sayin' ;)

How was it possible for life on Earth to survive for billions of years without “scientists” there to keep an eye on things and make sure nature was doing it right?
