Time to Bring Back the Truman Democrats
Daily Beast ^ | 12/21/2014 | Joel Kotkin

Democrats are pushing race and environmental issues when they should be embracing the lunch-bucket themes that once built party dominance. Meanwhile, voters flee. Once giants walked this earth, and some of them were Democrats. In sharp contrast to the thin gruel that passes for leadership today, the old party of the people, with all its flaws, shaped much of the modern world, and usually for the better. Think of Franklin Roosevelt or Harry Truman, John Kennedy, or California’s Pat Brown, politicians who believed in American greatness, economic growth, and upward mobility.

For more than 40 years, the Democratic Party has drifted far from this tradition, its policies increasingly a blend of racial and gender politics combined with a fashionable brand of environmental fanaticism. No longer does it constitute a reliable, middle class-based alternative to the corporatist mindset of the Republicans. “Today’s Democrats have no more in common with Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson ,” notes author Michael Lind, “than today’s Republicans have in common with Abraham Lincoln or Dwight Eisenhower. “

To regain their relevancy, Democrats need to go back to their evolutionary roots. Their clear priorities : faster economic growth and promoting upward mobility for the middle and working classes. All other issues—racial, feminine, even environmental—need to fit around this central objective. In survey after survey, economic issues such as unemployment, the economy, and the federal budget top the list of concerns while affirmative action, gay rights, and climate change barely register.

That kind of thinking and rhetoric drove manufacturing jobs out of Manhattan about a decade and a half after WWII ended, since it always involved growing government, raising taxes and increasing public spending. Never mind the mess the New Deal created.

” when they should be embracing the lunch-bucket themes that once built party dominance.”

They cannot do that without becoming conservative

The RATs of the 19th Century and of the Truman era haven't changed one iota. The party of the Ku Klux Klan and skinheads is just as racist here in 2014 as it was in 1861. Actually more so since their titular leader, hussein, is a raging, unhinged anti-white racist.

without question, the D party machinery has been captured and taken over by an extremely anti-American, anti-liberty, anti-Constitution, anti-jobs, anti-business, anti-Judeo/Christian and pro-IslamoNazi subversive element (with tons of foreign enemy money).

Put simply, its not your grandparents’ D party anymore.

Used to be, you COULD if you wanted vote for a D candidate without worrying s/he’d disarm America’s defenses and destroy our country’s values, morals, morale, and jobs.

Used to be.

The regular D voters need to recapture their party and toss the anti-American IslamoNazi bums out.

...politicians who believed in American greatness, economic growth, and upward mobility.

Democrats believe in grievance politics (for blacks), the sky is falling crap - club of rome, peak oil, global warming etc - for liberal elites to keep grant money flowing, flooding the country with illegals to keep wages down and blacks desperate and 'in their place', and radical feminism to supply college jobs for women who don't marry...

In short democrats exist to take care of their various victim groups.

If they 'change their tune' it's manipulation.

How do we know that? That's it's manipulation and nothing more?

We know how Democrats feel about average working Americans because Gruber told us. Gruber even thought we were so stupid he put his message in a comic book.

If you're an angry black, a dependent woman, a union leader, a white liberal elite or you're illegal - you're a democrat. The rest of us are running away from them...

Harry Truman attempted to nationalize the steel industry, he was only stopped by the Supreme Court. Bring back the Bourbon Democrats instead.

Democrats cheered when the two policemen were murdered.

They sat on their hands and ignored the IRS going after American citizens for their political beliefs.

Democrats didn't object to Obama setting us up to lose the next war... they didn't care when he lied about Obamacare either.

Anyone who was good in that party - anyone who didn't directly have their hand greased with money - has left the democrat party - or is in the process of switching.

Democrats are the party of disgruntled victims, nose-in-the-air elites, angry blacks, and dependent women.

Thank you for using the term union leader.
There is a distinction between the union leadership and the staff of the union and the rank-and-file members.

The Rat party today is nothing but one huge sewer of lunatics and psychopaths, but the good thing is they’re losing a lot of the old school Democrats like my Aunt and coworkers who said they will never ever vote Democrat again. And I can imagine that feeling just went to overdrive after the deliberate incitement of cop murder by the thugs running the Democrap party today.

Yep. Awhile back, I overheard two young people talking. I knew neither one. And I have no idea what started their conversation. But one said to the other: "The Democrats used to be for the people who work hard. Now they are for the people who hardly work."

Quite surprising, to say the least.

Harry Truman cared more about Democratic Party politics than he did about national security.

Truman had proof that Harry Dexter White was a Soviet agent, given to him by Hoover (see Elizabeth Bentley) but disliked Hoover and decided to double down on White and put him in the IMF where he could “keep an eye on him”.

Like hell. I used to respect Truman, but he was a political hack.

You're right. With the exception of Maddox - EVERY Southern racist democrat STAYED democrat... Even KKK Bryd stayed a democrat his whole life. KKK and White Citizens Council Democrats switched the tactics they used against blacks to using them against conservatives. Same voter fraud crap... same lies... same 'head in the sand' refusal to entertain a new idea.

I wouldn't know, having always refused to join a union, and that includes the times I desperately needed the work, but would walk out when told I would have to become one of them.

That is very true. Union leadership is corrupt, and they run phony, corrupt elections (oh, the stories I could tell).

But most rank-and-file union folks are conservative middle-class Reagan democrats. "Reagan" because Reagan's views make sense to them (even if they don't associate their beliefs with Reagan himself). And "democrats" because they were raised in democrat households.

The GOP leader of today who can tap this group will win in a landslide, just as Reagan did. Unfortunately, I don't think any GOP leader of today is smart enough to do that.

This author is PART of the left. The Daily Beast is the online beard of either TIME or Newsweak. I forget which. And I don't really care to be informed but I'm sure somebody will. Go ahead. I'll forget three seconds later anyway. Besides, it doesn't matter. They're Siamese twins joined at the hip. They may have different names but they're are part of one entity.
