FIVE fathers have lost children as a result of the mass murder in Cairns.
Four girls aged 14, 12, 11 and two and four boys aged nine, eight, six and five were stabbed to death in the Murray St home.
Detective Inspector Bruno Asnicar said the fathers were distraught by the news of the deaths of their children.
I dont think anybody would imagine any reaction other than absolute devastation to be told that your child is dead and of course that was the case, Det Insp Asnicar said.
The family, even under these horrific circumstances and the trauma they have been through, the support the family has been giving us in this investigation has been outstanding.
Its been because of them, that this process was able to be done in a really calm, easy and least intrusive way we possibly could.
The mother of seven of the youngest victims, Mersane Warria, remains under police guard at the Cairns Hospital after being arrested for the murders.
Det Insp Bruno Asnicar said confirmed the ages and sex of the victims, as well as confirming the mother is assisting police.
The mother of the children is currently assisting us with our enquiries, the scene behind us will be maintained for probably another two or three days, Det Insp Asnicar said.

Thanks naturalman1975.
It will be interesting to read her medical history, if they release it.
This is terrible. So sorry to read about it, and realize just how bad it was.
Thanks for the reports. Sympathies for your country, two big bad events in a week.
She had one child born at home, apparently on her own with no help, one born in the carpark of the local hospital when she didn’t quite get there in time, and once in an ambulance on the way to hospital - I think this photo is from that last instance.
I don’t understand how a mother could do this.
Nor can I. It’s even more baffling when I read about the extended family network she had available. Nothing justifies what she did, but if she was having problems, there should have been somebody she could have asked for help. This doesn’t seem to be a case where she was isolated and without support available. I’m not sure the overall family was a particularly healthy one - but even a dysfunctional family would have been better than what has happened.
Eight children with five fathers indicates to me that this woman has problems establishing a relationship with others.
Should have had her tubes tied by the time she turned 20. Now she needs a rope tied around her neck, followed by a short drop.
She thinks they will all be in Heaven together, but she is wrong. The kids will be in Heaven but the mom will be in hell.
Establishing....no, maintaining...yes.
Another Andrea Yates.
Aboriginal? No one saw this coming? Good grief, those poor innocent children.
Andrea Yates should have gotten the needle years ago.
Yes.
not for an hour or so...pig
Are the aborigines known for killing their own children?
Torres Strait Islanders, I think - a different indigenous group from the Aboriginals.
I think these people are Torres Strait Islanders, and to the best of my knowledge neither group are known for anything like this. Everything I am seeing is they are totally horrified and wondering what they could have done to stop this - as is everybody else in the area.
