CNBCStaples confirmed on Friday a data breach that may have affected more than 1 million cards.
An in-house investigation detected malware at some point-of-sale systems at 115 locations, the company said in a press release. Staples has more than 1,400 U.S. retail stores.
About 1.16 million cards may have been affected, the release said.

Nothing from Walmart so far. If this keeps up, Walmart may have kept its rep as the gold standard for data security, even after you throw in financial institutions, especially considering both Chase and Citibank have been hit.
I do love having that layer between my accounts and all these hackers...
Glad I have not been to Staples lately
Maybe it’s a byproduct of their low pay—few employees with the wherewithal to compromise systems from within. ;-)
I know my local Wal Mart switched out their readers months ago for the more advanced chip/pin readers.
If you have the little gold chip(Euro Style) in your card, you don’t swipe, you slide it into the bottom of the card machine.
Other places I do business aren’t utilizing the chip reader. They appear to have the hardware, it’s just that their software is still not up to date(according to employees).
Looks like darn near everything is going to have be cash just like it used to mostly be. I don’t write checks as a rule and can get several years out of a box.
Someone in a checkout line who has to stand there and starts to fill out a check only after they get a total and has to take a painstaking amount of time to make sure every letter and number is perfect just fries me to no end.
We see once again the advantages of using cash only when ever possible.
Good thing we never shop there...............
What’s Staples? /s
Those c-shaped wires that hold papers together, but that's not important. ;
On the flipside, though...if you have bills paid by what I call “autosuck” from your checking, you’re probably way more vulnerable than by writing that check.
I pay in Cash for everything, including at Staples recently. Should I be worried??
NOPE!
Identity Theft is just like pregnancy, Abstinence works every time it is tried.
If you DON’T make electronic transactions there is NO chance of your info being stolen
If you DON’T have sex, you will NOT get Pregnant.
cripes! I pay cash or check at staples all the time, except three wweks ago.
Sigh
My family and friends think I’m nuts writing checks and mailing them instead of doing the automatic bill paying thing. But I feel uneasy with anyone having access to my account, but me.
FNL, everyone at the bank has access to your account and trust me that doesn’t make it safe. Also, if you don’t get hacked at home, the bank can always be hacked and thousands of accounts hacked. Rest easy!
