On Friday, I was on the train to New York to do a teach-in on Ferguson at NYU. Beats headphones on, lost in thought, peering out the window, I suddenly saw a white hand shoving my work carry-on toward me. Startled, I looked up to see the hand belonged to a white guy, who was haphazardly handling my open bag, with my laptop perched just inside to make space for himself on the seat next to me.
That he wanted the seat on the now full train was not the problem. That he assumed the prerogative to place his hands on my bag, grab it, shove it at me, all while my computer was unsecured and peaking out, infuriated me. I said to him, “Never put your hands on my property.”
His reply: “Well, you should listen when I talk to you.” That line there, the command that when he, whoever he was, spoke, I should automatically listen encapsulates the breadth of the battle against racism we have to fight in this country.
To have a white man in 2014 demand that I listen when he speaks is the height of racial disrespect and indignity. To have a white person shove my belongings to the side rather than simply get my attention and ask my permission is an unnecessary level of disrespect, one that conveys yet again that their needs matter more than my own.
I do not exist to make white people comfortable. The fact that I know that and act like it makes white people even more uncomfortable.

This would have happened to ANYONE who was taking up more than a seat on a crowded train.
Some folks need to develop a thicker skin. Not everything is about race (unless you are Al Sharpton)
Not to mention it is against the law in NY to use an extra seat for your possessions. It is a ticketable offense.
Most of the recent wolf and bear attacks in Alaska happened to those wearing their beats headphones. They should have been listening to what goes on around them instead of their tunes. I never listen to music when I’m out in public, whether its in the wild or in the city or in town. Part of my situational awareness protocol.
She takes after Michelle. Apparently, white people interacting in any way with black people is racist.
“Fatphobia” — another one of those words that pretends people are afraid of what they actually are just disgusted about. The woman wasn’t scared of the fat woman, she was complaining about how she was stuck in a too-small airplane seat next to a woman who needed two seats.
And to compound it, the woman was also a busy-body ease-dropper.
I’m trying to imagine the story we’d be reading if the man had touched her shoulder to try to get her attention.
At the risk of being impolite, her fat butt was already taking up seat space for two and yet she felt her travel bag was more entitled to a third seat than any of the standing passengers?
I’m glad Salon published this because it certainly drives home a point, just not the point they hoped to make.

Absolutely zero concept of what was once termed “common courtesy”. She and her race-baiting cohorts are an open door as to why the Black ‘community” is getting more vociferous and belligerent.

Get over it fat-so. Take off those damn headphones and perhaps you might actually HEAR someone speaking to you. Additionally, you could have been a bit more considerate by NOT leaving you bag and computer on the seat next to you since you KNOW the train was full. Dumb ass.

First, it is extremely inconsiderate to fill an empty seat with your stuff on a full train. The man had every right to ask her to move stuff from the seat.
Second, if the guy had been black, she, statistically, would have been raped, stabbed or shot, &/or her property stolen.
Lady, count yourself lucky it was a white guy.
What we are now seeing is black privilege, black entitlement.
Blacks can now riot, loot, burn with impunity. Every word & action of a white is now racist, yet blacks can blatantly slander whites without consequence. Blacks routinely support violent criminals simply because the perp is black & his victims white. Blacks have their own groups & venues where whites are not welcome.
If this isn’t Jim Crow in reverse, I don’t know what is.
Oh, and not just her headphones, her BEAT headphones. Gotta give a shout out, ya know. She is so downtrodden, I, with my white privilege, can’t even afford to think of a luxury like $200 headphones.
