Some Republican and Democratic leaders, along with many of my colleagues in conservative talk radio were quick to criticize President Obamas move on Wednesday to restore diplomatic ties with Havana; they claimed it rewarded dictatorship and damaged Americas global posture and bargaining position.
Missing in much of the national conversation is how this White House maneuver checks Russias growing influence in Cuba, where Moscow, in Cold War fashion, has been flexing its military and economic muscles just 90 miles from the US coast in an overt challenge to our national security. A clear-minded analysis of Obama's move may impart future implications for Israel, as well...

I was in the Bay Of Florida salvaging a U2 plane that Castro shot down when it was announced that JFK had been shot dead.
Shaky times then....
No, that is an excuse to cover for Hussein’s hatred of America..
I’ll buy that.
Yep. Just like he traded 5 Taliban commanders for one U.S. serviceman. Yeah.. Riiiight. There’s ALWAYS a cover story.
The Communist regime in Cuba desperately needed a bailout because of the collapse of oil prices. Venezuela can not subsidize them any longer, so Obama drops everything to run to the regimes rescue.
They will try to line their pockets as best as they can from the situation, but the reason it was done, and the reason it was done now, was to maintain an ideological ally.
Like all good tyrant wannabes, Obama sees himself as the new Stalin. And he wants to create a new Soviet Union. An improved Soviet Union. A gay Soviet Union. That is why he sees Cuba, North Korea and Iran as allies. The Russians of course do not want that and would prefer to be the New Soviet Union themselves. A straight Soviet Union.
Exactly. Obama’s words and actions do not match. i think there is a headline on Drudge claiming Zero (I love that — picked it up here on FR) said he was Jewish in his soul. Some hogwash like that. The man is a total liar and deceiver. Hmmm reminds me of someone. Who does it remind me of? The Devil, that’s who.
You believe Obama regards North Korea as an ally?
I have never heard that one before.
Whatever Obama’s motives are in Cuba, the bulk of the people living there will eventually have better lives if Cuba and the USA are on good terms.
I hope Cruz is the next President, even though I think he has no shot, but Obama’s move is a good one.
Cruz’s comments that Cuba is about to fall are silly. Been hearing those statements for around 50 years.
Better to have an ally 90 miles away than an enemy.
Anything that hurts the POS Putin is good stuff.
Law of Unintended Consequences. Obozo will find a way to let Moscow have its way.
This has nothing to do with Obama geo-strategery. He doesn’t think that way. This is just another item ticked off the Frank Marshall Davis bucket list he’s working through to try to gain approval from the only Daddy figure in hs life who didn’t reject him.
Obama wants to go to Cuba so he can Bow and Worship Fidel in Person
It is completely plausible, as a counter to potential Russian moves.
Back in July, it was reported that the Russians were negotiating with Cuba for basing rights, for a naval maintenance and supply center, as well as airfield basing rights.
They are also talking to Vietnam about a partial reopening of the Cam Ranh base, and to the Seychelles about basing rights in the Indiana Ocean.

One possible beneficiary will be American wheat farmers. Europe ships 150 million dollar of wheat to Cuba which may now be replaced by American wheat. I wonder which of Obama’s cronies will get the trade contracts.

I thought Russia’s interest in Cuba peaked during the Brezhnev era. Didn’t they stop sending Cuba wheat and oil back in the early 2000’s? And isn’t that why Venezuela stepped in?
This is a good chess move.
Apparently you missed today’s earlier article about Obama trying to open relations with North Korea last year. Yeah Putin is the devil. That is the smart play here.
Funny! Obama’s REAL reason or normalizing Cuba relations!
