I grew up in an international gemstone and jewelry business. My father had me using a microscope in a gemological laboratory when I was 8 years old and I earned my degree in gemology at 19. His business associates gave me my screen name back in the early ‘80s and it has stuck. On a side note, my father had a telex in his office back in the ‘70s and he subscribed to all the news services. We got the news “hot off the wire” and I also became a news hound at a very young age.

Thanks very much, Army Bro!

The origin of my FReeper name:

Conor MacNessa, mythological high king of Ireland in the Ulster Cycle of Irish mythology. He figures also, in the poetry of Yeats:

"And Conchubar [Conor MacNessa], the Red Branch king of kings,
With his own fingers touched the brazen strings."

" . . . and the king whose eyes
Saw the pierced Hands and Rood of elder rise
In Druid vapour and make the torches dim;
Till vain frenzy awoke and he died"

The second passage, from "The Secret Rose," reflects the legend of Conor's death. He was supposed to have lived at the time of Christ. He had been wounded in battle years earlier, with a stone that pierced his skull and remained lodged there. He had a vision of the Crucifixion and became so wroth that he ejected the stone and his brains followed, killing him.

I always thought he had the right instincts.

O stranger, tell the Lacedaemonians that we lie here, obedient to their command.

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

Years ago I had a friend who was bipolar. He went off his meds and started throwing bricks at people out his 2nd story apt window and the police ended up hauling him off naked.

I used to play the original Halflife video game in multiplayer and they eventually came out with user created skins. One was for the scientist who looked like Albert Einstein, naked.

I used to like using the tire iron and run up to people and WHAPWHAPWHAP and doing it as a naked old man was so funny I told my friends I was having a manic episode. That became my screen name and has been ever since.

So here's a chance for me to brag among friends. I'll come up and call it that, even though I was more perplexed than anything.

So I'm on twitter, and I use it primarily as a math teacher to talk to other educators. Most of my friends aren't on it (to my knowledge). And I generally avoid controversial topics because, you know, liberals, teachers. I don't need the blowback.

I do, however, follow a handful of conservatives, most of whom I chose because they show up on twitchy.com.

Out of the blue yesterday, I get a notification of a new follower: Michelle Malkin is following me. I just stared at the screen.

Oddly enough, I don't follow her, so it wasn't a reciprocity thing. And the five people I follow who follow her dont' follow me.

The only thing I can figure is that she saw a link to my blog on another blog post about Jeopardy and Common Core Math during their recent kids week. I checked. I haven't made it onto twitchy yet -- but now I have a goal!

Not too difficult to comprehend.

Named after Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Live in Upland.

I made literally a couple thousand calls to talk radio during the Clinton years. (Actually started as a teenager calling in to Joe Pyne in Los Angeles.) On the phone we have............Doug from Upland.

Good evening, Kathy!

*HUGS*

Another short visit. :(

I didn't get home until well after 2100, but I did get a crucial piece of Christmas shopping done - Mrs. MacNessa's main gift. Joy will break out at Castle MacNessa on Christmas morning.

We're still behind the power curb - the tree is up, lights are strung, but we're only about halfway there with the decorations. Probably won't get to the outside lights until this weekend.

Tomorrow evening is our last rehearsal for Midnight Mass - I may or may not be on tomorrow evening.

"Dia shábháil ar fad anseo!"
This is the Arabic character "nun" – the first letter of the word "Nazarene." I post it as my avatar in solidarity with people of all faiths suffering persecution at the hands of Islam. Many of them are members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, dating from the days of the Apostles. They endure cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors they, and we, are all "Nazarenes."

I’m a retired Navy CPO with26 years service. I did some time in the Merchant Marine before I joined the Navy where I served aboard seven different carriers and made 10 major deployments and a bunch of lesser ones like NATO cruises and short deployments to the North Atlantic.
I figured that was enough to call myself an oldsalt...so I did.
