Sure, let lame duck Barack Obama normalize relations with Cuba.

Better him than somebody who still has a meaningful political career.

Since John F Kennedy, Presidential foreign policy towards Cuba can be summed up in one sentence: Let my successor be the one who has to be the guy that let Fidel Castro win. Well, guess what: Barack Obama volunteered to be the poor, stupid sad sack that has to eat the pavement on that. CNBC reports: “The U.S. is starting talks with Cuba to normalize full diplomatic relations and open an embassy, according to U.S. officials. The expanded relationship would also open imports of Cuban cigars somewhat, according to a CNN report.” We get cigars and some political prisoners released; Cuba gets to win.

Let me revisit what I said on the subject of the embargo, back in 2009:

Should we end the embargo? Well, we’ve traded with worst regimes, and I don’t think that the current system is doing what we want it to. Do I think that doing so will cause a stink? Very much so. Is it fair that most of it will slop onto the current administration? Not especially. Do I personally care?

[snip of 2009 topical reference] …not in the slightest.

I still stand by that, me. But it’s nice that Barack Obama’s doing this favor for the next President. It’s about time that the man started thinking about other people.

Public negotiations on normalizing relations with Cuber would have been preferable. There are many unhealed wounds and closeted secrets that need resolution. All we have now are Obama’s assurances that he knows best.

Of course the cigar trade is controlled by the Castro family with the proceeds going to a Swiss bank. So they will do even better with the US market more open.
Cuba still has hundreds of political prisoners and they will release only 50? Great job Brown man...you are a super negotiator.

Still searching for that illusive legacy decision that doesn’t blow up in his face - say goodbye to a million Cuban voters in Florida.

The President is granted the sole right to diplomatic relations according to the Constitution. While Obama might be a lame duck, he has every right to engage in diplomatic relations with Cuba. This is so no matter how ill-advised it might be.

Cuba stole billions in US assets, and we’re going to let them off the hook.

That’s defeat, folks.

Obama has always been envious how Castro with impunity has been able to torture and murder his political opponents. No one should be surprised. It was a given that the vile Obama would openly embrace the barbaric communists he has so long admired.

I would not be surprised if 0bama unilaterally decides to give Guantanamo to Castro.

We could start speculation on who the first ambassador will be. It won’t be a career professional because there are just too many big money/name lib supporters who will be seeking the honor. Any suggestions from FRVille?

Maybe we can do an exchange program with North Korea... or better - let Cuban thugs teach in our schools...

I thought that was a key reason for the embargo and lack of diplomatic relations all these years, because Cuba had seized American owned assets in Cuba. You would hope that there would be some negotiation over that issue of compensation, if we are going down this road with Cuba.

You are forgetting the one advantage....with medical care failing in America and the Obama-Care Package costing so much.....here’s the chance to get onto a Air Cuba plane in New Orleans ($100 round-trip), fly into Cuba and get a $18,000 surgery package for $1000. Get a free bottle of rum while in recovery phase. Then fly back.

The problem I see here...the Senate won’t sign the treaty if there’s no free elections (we’ve said that for thirty years). Even the Democrats sitting here will pretty say the same thing.

Is that true any more? Seems people have VERY short memories, and quickly forget Communist oppression. More concerned with police brutality, marriage equality and other social justice issues .
