Jackie Robinson West Baseball accused of cheating

The Jackie Robinson West sluggers from Chicago’s struggling South Side became national celebrities this summer when they hit and pitched their way to the Little League World Series and took home the U.S title.

But now the adults who put together the team — parents, coaches and league administrators — face allegations they violated Little League residency rules by stacking the lineup with All-Star ringers from the suburbs to create a “super team” that became champs. http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20141216/morgan-park/jackie-robinson-west-broke-residency-rules-suburban-league-claims

This should come as a surprise to no one. We know the type of ‘ethical’ people that come from the ‘hoods of Chicago.

No facilities (fields, etc.) for inner city baseball - especially Little League.

As to the “no big deal” posts - actually it is a pretty big deal. Williamsport usually does pretty serious vetting of these teams and players (especially after the Danny Almonte incident). In this case, suspiciously, it seems they backed off.

Chicago actually has a pretty good public park system with a lot of diamonds in the greenway along Lake Shore Drive on the South Side. There are places for Little League Teams to play in inner city Chicago. Of course, having a field doesn’t mean they will always follow the rules while playing.

These were not members of the Busch family, or of the Bush family. This took place in Ohio so maybe they were related to John Boehner, unless his memory is too hazy as to whom his relatives are. He has certainly forgotten what party he represents.

Are you kidding? I thought ALL these teams were the All-Stars of their respective neighborhood leagues.

My son was on one.

This is all racist talk.....haven't these poor children been held down long enough?

What does it matter if they "bent the rules" a little bit?

Aren't they "the Man's Rules" anyway?

They're just, rightfully, sticking it to "the Man", who has held them down for so long.

Reparations? You bet they are, and it's about time!

They stack teams in soccer (especially girl's soccer), downhill skiing, shooting of all types, Pop Warner football, etc.

This is hardly news.

It’s been a while since I was involved in Youth Baseball, but my understanding of the Little League rules is that the national organization charters a local league as an affiliate. That league can field any number of recreational or travel teams that play under the Little League rules.

When that local league competes in the “playoffs” to get to the Little League World Series, it can field a team made up of “all stars” of the best players within it’s organization. I don’t think they can have players who didn’t register with that organization to play, in other words, getting ringers from other Little League or youth baseball organizations.

My first thought when I saw the Chicago JRW team players was that many of them looked a lot older than 12. Part of the investigation into the team’s legitimacy should include players’ birth certificates. We already know one “kid” that came out of Chicago with an invalid birth certificate. There just might be others.
