Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid pulled out one of his most familiar threats during perhaps his last week as majority leader, pledging to keep the Senate in session through the weekend to get 23 of President Barack Obamas nominations confirmed and pass bills extending billions in tax breaks and providing terrorism risk insurance to commercial buildings.
The Senate already worked one Saturday this month, so why not another?
While the Nevada Democrat is not yet warning senators that the chamber could work on Christmas, his remarks on Monday morning were clearly aimed at getting Republicans to relent on procedurally fighting him and wrap up the Senates business as soon as possible.
Now that Reid has set up votes on nominees including Vivek Murthy to be surgeon general, White House adviser Tony Blinken to be deputy secretary of state, Sarah Saldana to be director of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, and a dozen lifetime judicial appointments, he is now trying to use the inevitability of their confirmation to speed up the Senates work and allow its lame-duck lawmakers to finally join House members and head home for the year.
Though Republicans will take over the Senate in January, as long as Democrats hold the majority and can keep their members in town ahead of the holidays they can unilaterally confirm all these nominees due to last years nuclear option rules change.
Everything is scheduled now for moving forward. We could finish it today. So I hope that everyone understands we can move forward but were going to be here until we finish our work, whether thats Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday. So everyone should understand you cant be leaving, Reid said.

I'll give Harry Reid some credit where credit is due here. The backstabbing elitist RINO monsters passed a horrendous budget bill because they didn't want to work over the weekend, and the dems obliged. So now that they got their way on the budget, the dems are going to stay in session anyway and pass those horrible Obama nominations.
On the plus side, the RINOs can't any longer try to blame Ted Cruz for the mess they created. If anything, if they had stuck to stalling the budget the US Senate might not have gotten to the nominations.
The RINOs are backstabbers and self-absorbed idiots. We deserve better.
I think they passed it because they are backstabbing elitists.
I also have the impression that they're trading their dirty laundry for dem's dirty laundry. D.C is a cesspool.
Give it up about Cruz. Go away. You’re critical of him yet have no solutions to offer to turn this country around.
“I dont think Id have a fit when asked to work an occasional weekend”
Is it really work or attendance?
Beat it loser. You are the problem and not the solution.
Mark Steyn mentioned something regarding this on Rush Today. He said that the USA is the only country that he knows of that elects representatives who then do not make control over their elected offices immediately. This “lame duck” BS needs to be history.
My new and improved tagline line says it all!
‘In 2016, if a Conservative is elected President and the Republicans hold on to the Senate, then there is no reason in the world that the Republic’
I guess your position is directed to conservatives, not republicans, stopping liberal appointees.
Problem is there are not 40 conservatives in Senate, as proven by vote on budget.
In January there will be 9 more Republicans and 9 less Democrats. Hopefully, some of those 9 are conservatives.
Ummmmm... Yeahhh...
Welcome to the working world where many people work weekends and holidays. I hope that they are stuck there until March.
“In January there will be 9 more Republicans and 9 less Democrats. Hopefully, some of those 9 are conservatives. “
So add it up: 22 GOP vote for Cruz’s measure. 22 +9 does not equal 40
Wait ‘til the journ-0-lists are done with her.
She’ll be a courageous Native American grandma fighting for the middle class against Wall Street.
Add in a black VP for the entitlement army vote and you have a potentially winning ticket.
