A hostage has been forced to hold up an Islamic State flag in the window of a shop in Martin Place that is currently under siege.
It is believed there are 12 hostages in the store and an ISIS flag has been placed in the window.
Martin Place is the main financial area of the Sydney CBD.

Well this guy is saying thy have not yet had contact with the guy...so I’ll accept that is the case...but the longer they can stand this off really the better....but they’re messing with the wrong ountry whoever it is that’s pulling this hostage situation...might be someone just using Islamic flag etc. to get attention...until that’s determined he did say they are on a “terrorist footing” according this officer speaking now...and there are negotiators on the sceene.

First thing I looked up was where their SAS is based, it’s a long flight from the capital.
It’s like having the all Delta Force/SEAL teams/etc based in San Diego 3,000 miles away from DC. I’m amazed the Aussies don’t have the first team closer to their capitol and the major urban terrorist targets.
Maybe the negotiator is just buying time until the gov’t gets their assets in place to strike. Negotiators are trained in many psychological tactics to weaken the perp and his position .
Keep the terrorist engaged talkin until they can pump some fentanyl in there.
They said in the press conf just now that there has been no contact with the perp as of yet.

The SAS is a long way away. But 1st Commando Regiment and 2nd Commando Regiment and Clearance Diving Team One are local - and all are trained to do what’s needed.
The SAS may be the best of the best - but any of these three can get the bloody job done.

I suspect those teams are smarter than me but I honestly can’t see any way out of this except to kill the terrorist and hope he doesn’t kill all the hostages when they do.
Sort of like the situation the Russians were in. No real way to do it without extreme risk to innocents.
