Party’s Over: Canadian Navy Bans Drinking at Sea

OTTAWA, Dec 12 (Reuters) – The Royal Canadian Navy on Friday imposed an almost total ban on sailors drinking at sea, after a warship had to be recalled from an international exercise because inebriated crew members got into trouble.

Sailors had hitherto been allowed to drink off duty. Now, they will only be able to sample alcohol on special occasions such as Christmas, if the captain gives permission.

I used to spend time with foreign armies sometimes and saw a lot of drinking, for instance the French filled their canteens with wine, even during exercises and of course wine was available for breakfast if one wanted, but I was the only one I saw indulging in that. Wine was a part of lunch, and then before supper it was drinks in the canteen, and then wine at dinner, either (always) free red wine, or you could purchase better wine for your meal. When not in garrison on at a permanent training camp, the French kept the drinking canteen in a large tent.

The Germans indulged and would have beer flown out to them in the field on exercises.

I know that Captain.

Wish I knew what I did with that stack of comics I inherited from my older brother

Somehow, I expect no less of the Teutonic folk. ;-)

He stuffed his ass with broken glass,
And circumcised the Skipper!

I went aboard a French Frigate in the Indian Ocean once back in the 70s. I swear they had a water type fountain that spewed out wine.

Here's one from T.S. Eliot:

As we were putting out to sea,
We spied a German warship.
The Captain paced the quarter-deck,
Parading, in his corset.
"What ho!" we cried, "We'll sink your ship!"
And so we up and sinked her,
But the cabin boy was saved alive,
And buggered in the sphincter.

I figured there’d be some dumbass making a crack about the Canadian military. Here’s something for you to chew on: on a per capita basis, no country in the last 100 years has shed more sweet patriot blood in the defense of freedom than Canada - including the United States.

All that's true, and admirable, but yesterday's glory won't do Canada much good today.

That’s nice, but it doesn’t change the fact that currently, the Canadian military is totally insignificant ~ less than 70,000 active personnel IIRC. And a big reason for that is because you saps know you can lean on us down here to protect you.

O Canada, WE stand on guard for thee.

Sexual misconduct and shoplifting whilst buggering seals at Sea World.
I’m sure the Queen’s disappointed with them was as great as with the cabin boy.

There will always be a way around the "no drinking" sign.

Sailor, GI, No matter.

"The first mate he got the fits, ate up all of my grits, then he took and he drank up all of my corn...."

The Army was the same way, once the regimental commander showed up for Camerone day during an exercise in Valdehon, and before we started eating (the food was always incredible, and multi course, with red jacketed enlisted waiters) or listening to him, or anything else at the somewhat formal dinner (although we were in our work uniforms and would be returning to work), he made everyone fill their 8 ounce glass with wine, and chug it down, needless to say the wine flowed freely after that.

Their lunches and dinners in the military seemed to always last for 1 hour to 3 hours, they live at a different pace than us. Dinner was typically about 2 hours.

Sounds hokey. Nothing of the sort googles up, except of course for this entry.

For days and days,
And nights and nights
They sailed the wide Atlantic.

If not for the hope of a piece of a**
The sailors would be frantic.

The only conclusion that can be drawn: Canadians are sexual dynamos.
