It’s ironic that the peoples Comrade Mayor would build a fence between himself and his fellow Comrade Citizens. Since 1942, Gracie Mansion has served as the "official" residence of NY's mayors. Expected to remain in his own home, the mayor could use Gracie Mansion for entertaining and hosting mayoral events. (I attended an open house on St. Patrick's Day when Guiliani was mayor. The whiskey flowed freely that morning.)
Until David Dinkins, no mayor ever lived in Gracie Mansion. I remember the uproar at the expense of refitting the 200 year old house for human occupation. Outrage over squandering the public's money is long dead.

The new fence clashes with the old visually.....and the whole effect is an eyesore.
I can't stand the new mayor.
Given those caveats, I don't blame him at all for himself and his family not wanting to live in a scary fishbowl in the middle of a restless, unstable city.
I would live elsewhere for privacy and safety...and utilize the historic but prison-like mansion for official events, receptions and the like. I and mine wouldn't want to live there for one day!

He might be afraid the cops will no longer protect him as well, after he said publicly that he had to warn his son to watch out for them.
Cops told him not to come to their funerals. Nice work o police-community relations.
The man is quite stupid. Plus he has bad taste in fences.
