From the National Archives (these fifteen made it through the House, and Massachusetts didn't ratify the Bill of Rights until 1939):

Look at the 5th Article which became and ratified as the Second Amendment. It reads:

“A well regulated militia, composed of the body of the People, being the best security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, but no one religiously scrupulous of bearing arms, shall be compelled to render military service in person.”

Just, WOW! The militia is “the body of the People” it is ALL of the people. The concept of “well regulated” meant that their firearms, needed for defense of the country, needed to be well maintained— that is what they meant by “well regulated” (not some damn legislative control or municipal code enforcement). All of the People are the militia and their right to keep and bear arms is not to be infringed.

They knew what they were talking about. Because of European tyrant monarchs, and the possibility of a monarchic present_dent.
