California bans wildlife-killing contests
SF Chronicle ^ | December 5, 2014 | Peter Fimrite

The California Fish and Game Commission has banned predator killing contests, ending a fierce debate over the rural tradition. The commission’s 4-1 vote Wednesday marks the first prohibition in the country against the practice of giving out prizes for gunning down coyotes and other predators, which wildlife advocates say happens almost every month in California and nearby states. “This ruling sets a trend for the nation,” said Camilla Fox, executive director of Project Coyote, which petitioned the state to end the contests. “Our hope is that other states will follow suit and ban wildlife killing contests. Such barbaric cruelty should not be accepted or tolerated in the 21st century or in a nation that has banned such practices as dog fighting and cock fighting.” The ruling makes it illegal to offer a prize, inducement or reward for killing predators, including coyotes, foxes and bobcats. It does not, however, prevent hunters from simply shooting the predators on sight.

The best way to approach this is to create imaginary contests and send state officials on wild goose chases. Then they can expand the imaginary hunts to endangered animals, and really drive the fruitcakes nuts. For example.

January 7 - California Condor Hunt. Grand prize $100,000.

I’d be interested to know how the California Fish and Game Commission ended up having the right to do this. Seems to me like this should be a question for the Legislature to decide. Of course, this is California, so the Legislature would probably vote the same way, but still....

Drip...drip...drip...another ramp-up of little chips in the right to bear arms or hunt, etc., under the guise of “animal rights” this time, begins again...keep an eye on this one.

Then We The People should have Catch and Release Contests, don’t much matter where you catch ‘em, but to count they must be released in downtown Sacramento...

I can’t recall ever VOTING FOR anyone of the California Fish & Game Commission. Wondering if these are the same a-holes that drove the price of a fishing license up to forty something dollars a year. A friend was telling me about that. I haven’t been fishing in years. Was $5.00 for a license when I was fishing.

I don’t understand where these commissioners get their authority to wantonly impose restrictions that seem to me the responsibility of our elected representatives in Sacramento. Sounds like California has taken a page from D.C.

“This ruling sets a trend for the nation,” said Camilla Fox, executive director of Project Coyote,

Maybe Camilla is worried about Fox hunts...

Don't let the name fool you, more like rabid rabbit. I wonder How Camilla feels about the children and pets targeted by overly populous and aggressive coyotes here in California, wait already know, the Coyotes are more important than someone's child.

There are apparently no limits to government stupidity.

California seems to be leading the nation in that department.

A while back a California Game commissioner came to idaho, bought a tag, and killed a lion. Went home happy until the residents tried to crucify him for a totally legal act. I think they may have succeeded.

They did succeed, he is no longer commissioner. Seemingly, the man in charge of hunting may not hunt.
