The Last Southern Democrat (Mary Landrieu's imminent political demise)

HAMMOND, La.—Mary Landrieu is dead, and everyone knows it but Mary Landrieu.

The senior senator from Louisiana, a diminutive blond woman with a round, youthful face, is standing under a green canopy in the middle of an airfield. The canopy reads, "City of Hammond, Too Lovely to Litter." There is frustration in her voice as she repeats, yet again, the message nobody seems to be hearing. "The national race is over," she says. "This race is clearly now about what's in Louisiana's best interest."

Landrieu's death was foretold on November 4, when any remaining hope Democrats might have had that their candidates' individual qualities could overcome voters' hostility to the president was washed away in a national Republican wave of unexpected proportions. Though Landrieu was also on the ballot that day, thanks to Louisiana's quirky election laws, it was only the first round—an all-parties primary featuring four Democrats, three Republicans, and a Libertarian. Landrieu got 42 percent of the vote; Bill Cassidy, a physician and Republican congressman, got 41 percent. Now the two of them are pitted head-to-head in a runoff election Saturday.

It is the last Senate contest of 2014 to be decided, a lingering loose end, a hangnail of an election that—now that Republicans have already won the Senate majority—will affect practically no one, except Mary Landrieu and her constituents.

Since the primary, Landrieu has undergone a series of humiliations. First, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee announced it would not spend any money supporting her in the runoff. Landrieu's campaign was already practically broke, and in the weeks following the primary more than 90 percent of the television ads Louisiana voters saw were from Cassidy or groups supporting him.

No, actually. I learned all I really need to know by his description of Landrieu.

After tomorrow night, she’ll be a Washington DC has-been Senator trying to capitalize on her former elected glory as a lobbyist. She’ll never come back to Louisiana....

Folks, voters in Louisiana, The Mary Landrieu defeat tomorrow is quite important. Not about Landrieu....she is poliitical toast....no, burnt political toast. The most important factor of this Senate run-off election is how much Landrieu loses by. Why?

Not because it matters to her or Bill Cassidy, (Cassidy will win) her Republican opponent....but, because it is absolutely necessary that Landrieu be massively rejected, defeated and politcally slaughtered in tomorrow’s run-off election..so that POTUS Barack Hussein (Muslim Brotherhood Adoree) Obama....be reduced to a full blown “Lame Duck” POTUS, Immediately.

Every legal voter in the great state of Louisiana, rgardless of political party should turn out tomorrow and vote against Mary Landrieu in overwhelming numbers.....including “all” African-Americans. Why? Obama is out to destroy the American Republic.......and he has already thrown African-Americans under the bus, time after time!!!

I can assure you that Black Americans stand alone isolated, adrift at sea....with their only allies being, Obama, communists, leftists, socialists, radicals, thugs, druggies, criminals, public labor union, low life, the CBC, the NAACP and the Democrat Party!!! Voting for Mary Landrieu.....Blacks gain absolutely nothing!!!

Obama has failed you for six years and continues to use you for his own greedy political purposes......for goodness sake....wake up!!! going through life on the Obama Slave Plantation is no way to go through life in America. You folks deserve much better, if only you self-examine yourselves and take a different culture path and positive way of life through strong families, education, opportunity and individual freedom !!!

Very long article, but very interesting. Anyone who has a few minutes, it’s an enjoyable read.

Even Cassidy's supporters tend to euphemistically describe him as "not a natural politician." (Cedric Richmond, a Democratic congressman from New Orleans, memorably told Politico, "Dude is weird.") Observers predict Cassidy will be a middle-of-the-road Republican senator who votes reliably with soon-to-be-Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and devotes himself to energy and health-care issues. That is, assuming he doesn't spend his time "fighting subpoenas," as Landrieu predicts.

Records show obvious extortion from the charity hospital he headed up and he has not been campaigning for about a week to avoid questions about the possible indictment coming down. Just let him get rid of Mary Landrieu tomorrow and then the RINO can resign and go on to jail and Rob Maness can be appointed as his replacement.

I was as surprised by the “diminutive” adjective as you. Diminutive does NOT just mean “short” it means “petite”. Mary “Thunder Thighs” is NOT freakin’ diminutive.

Actually, I think ‘diminutive’ was the only adjective he could come up for “short, fat, and dumpy” piglet.

West Virginia is still loaded with democrats, but most claim to be pro-life and act like republicans. Joe Manchin comes to mind. He claims he’s pro-life, pro-2nd amendment, pro-marriage, and ran for the senate in 2012 against ObamaCare. He has a campaign poster of him using an ObamaCare sign for target practice. But I think once he got in the senate he voted to fund it. But anyway his social beliefs are more republican than democrat. I think Manchin remains a democrat because “well my deddie was a democrat, and my grandpa, and my great grandpa, and my great-great grandpa”. But if he wants to remain a US senator he needs to switch parties. I think the WV legislature might have flipped to Republicans last month also. The writing is on the wall Joe! Be a man, get out of the party of welfare and Satan.

I have to disagree. Cassidy has given me the creeps from the git-go, and not because I was a Maness supporter. He looks weird, acts weird and that phony smile drives me up a wall. Now, he's facing a possible indictment for billing the the charity hospital, that he headed, for days worked when he was in session in Congress. That's why he has cancelled all his campaign appearances for the past week; to avoid questions about the investigation. Just let him defeat Landrieu tomorrow, then whatever happens to him.... who shives a git.

Don’t disagree with me. Disagree with the poster of #19.

I’ll just be glad to see this legacy b!tch go on the ash heap of other legacy failures like Michelle Nunn and Jason Carter.......

I sincerely hopes this repudiation is what keeps Webb’s daughter from ever getting and elected seat anywhere.

"..if Landrieu loses, Democrats will not control a single governorship, Senate seat, or legislative chamber from the Carolinas to Texas".

What you are seeing is the hardening of the regional divide similar to that before the Civil War. If there is a new Civil War the there will be a need for one of the combatants to fight for a pacific port. I also doubt that California will get their water allocation from the Colorado River if they choose to side with the Northeastern states.

Actually regardless of political label, Senator Bill Nelson is a totally useless public servant....period!!! End of story!!!

Yes. He is useless but the elderly will be supporting him. He’s got them thinking that he’s actually doing something good for them.

They need to wake up and smell the coffee. The democrat are the party of Obama.

The senate votes along straight party lines. Joe needs to switch parties before his next run or leave. I don’t know if it’s true or not but I’ve heard he wants to run for governor next time.

I predict that Manchin will not run for reelection to the Senate in 2016. He’s not been happy there. He said the U.S. Senate is the most non-productive stint of his political career. Look for him to run for his old job; Governor.
