The gas tax has been fixed at 18 cents for two decades. Now would be a great time to raise it
Washington Post ^ | December 3, 2014 | Chris Mooney

Nationally averaged gas prices ticked down a little lower today -- yet again -- to $2.75 per gallon. They're now more than 50 cents lower than they were a year ago. So no wonder, at a time like this, the murmur is growing: Maybe Congress ought to think about raising the national gasoline tax.

It was last raised, in the year 1993, to 18.4 cents per gallon. That's over 20 years ago, and gas prices at the time were close to the now unimaginable $1.00 per gallon mark. Yet the amount of the gas tax was fixed and not tied to inflation -- so it has not changed since. (U.S. states also charge gasoline taxes; the national average is about 23.5 cents.)

Greedy Bas***ds !!

For most politicians and all liberals it is always a good time to get their hands in your pockets.

And then they become confused as to why the economy is sluggish and can’t seem to rebound.

Let’s get rid of the FUEL tax and all other taxes in accordance with the FAIR TAX. Then we can re-tax the gasoline at the same rate as all other goods.

I'm actually very happy with "user" taxes, that are collected from users and solely spent to support that use. It is far more capitalist than other mechanisms, in that it balances what you get directly to what you pay.

I'm a huge fan of the flat consumption tax, and I prefer having it, even it if meant eliminating special use taxes. I'm just pointing out that user taxes make a lot of sense (as long as the revenue is truly used for its intended purpose).

The gov’t already makes more money per barrel of oil than the oil companies. Taxes need to be REDUCED not raised.

Did you ever notice that the biggest proponents of an increased gas tax live in places like NY City? Most of them probably don’t even drive cars or drive very little because of the availability of Public Transportation. You never hear about the need for an increase in gas taxes from people who live in Texas or Montana or other Western States where driving a car is the only means of transportation and in many cases over long distances. I guess the Metropolitan City dwellars will advocate that everyone should move to the inner cities (So they can be subject to Urban Crime).

Now would be a good time to eliminate the tax and for liberals to STFU.
Eliminating it on federal and state levels would usher in a new era of prosperity for the USA.

The NYers want the rest of the country to pony up to help pay for their $1 billion a mile plus mass transit boon doogles.

Eff that.

Dump gas into the Potomac, ala Boston Tea Party, and set it on fire so Congress can see the flames.

Maybe then they’ll get the idea.

They’re pushing the same thing at the state level here in Iowa.

Led by our Republican governor for life, Terry Branstad.

It seems to be practically his only agenda after winning a record sixth term.

I would only support raising state fuel taxes. The federal tax gets spent on political projects with money going to crony capitalist donors whose companies build the projects. My state of Texas never gets back its fair share of dollars. I don’t want to fund any more “Big Digs” like the one in Boston.

The pigdog who wrote this is Chris Mooney.

Here are some of his other mouth-excrement:

Anything this asshole suggests is 180 degrees from what we should do.

So how do you propose to pay for highways? I can see getting rid of the federal fuel tax, because it would prevent wasteful spending on crony supported projects. I would much rather have a state fuel tax hike that would stay in my state.

This would be a good time to lower spending. Democrats are always finding taxes that “need” to be raised, but it never occurs to them that we have a whole lot more government than we need. Less government is the best thing they could do for the poor, for minorities, for working Americans, and for the disadvantaged - which is why they resist the idea.

The winners in the General Asylum in Maryland stole over $1,000,000,000 from the transportation fund then, when they realized they had no money for roads, they did the natural thing. A 6% SALES TAX on gasoline.

Where is the incentive to push for lower gas prices? There is none.

It’s not per gallon it’s per dollar.

What this moron that calls himself a reporter fails to mention is that there are a hell of a lot more folks driving cars than twenty years ago.

Why isn't he advocating for a full audit of the dept. of transportation to find out where all of those billions of bucks are going.

Wasn’t it reported just last week that the federal gubmint took in a record amount of taxes last quarter?

They’re getting plenty of money, but they’re addicted to overspending.
