How Your Death Affects Climate Change
The Huffington Post ^ | December 3, 2014 | by Katrina Spade, Founder and Director, Urban Death Project

You might take solace in the fact that when you die, your days of polluting the planet are over. But the truth is that the method you choose to dispose of your mortal remains has more of a deleterious impact on the environment than you might think.

Conventional burials contribute to climate change in a number of ways. Although embalming slows the decomposition process, it does not stop it completely.

Cremation is relatively benign compared to conventional burial, thanks in part to the required filtering of emissions done by crematories in the United States. Still, the average cremation uses 28 gallons of fuel to burn a single body, emitting about 540 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Death -- like birth -- is a momentous event, and it deserves rituals that resonate deeply for us as humans. Connecting with the natural cycles as we die or grieve the loss of a loved one helps us heal by reminding us that we are ultimately part of an incredible ecological system.

Well, if I wanted a figurehead for a horror named the Urban Death project, that’s the one I’d use. But Katrina? I have some rather bad news for you, dear. Every molecule that makes you up originated on the earth and every one that you disintegrate back into will remain here. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. The rest is just process.

If I can’t get my wish of a Viking Funeral, (big party on the beach, at sunset push the boat out into the bay and set it alight) I am going to go for the pine box option.

We should really start thinking about assisted suicide for this entire group.

Really.

FReepers are big thinkers! Only thing that would piss off the enviro-nuts more would be to douse the boat with old gasoline and oil, for big clouds of black smoke!

The Conqueror Worm must have his due.

I would rather have a pine box and no chemicals. Unfortunately I think being buried like that most places is illegal. Maybe they’re afraid I may break wind in the afterlife.

Sometimes I have this weird vision: We should stand tall before the Man in our birthday suits, skeletons; not with all the impedimentia of embalmed flesh.

My daughter has promised to burn me on a pyre of old tires.

I only hope that she waits until I really AM dead.

I wanted to be cremated, but now I might consider a traditional burial so that I can contribute to “climate change”.

Why would I care about climate change when I’m dead?

I think it's illegal for disease reasons. Bury a body of someone with say Ebola in a pine box and as soon as the box rots, you've got a contamination of the soil/groundwater that could be uncontrollable.

Some bodies should be cremated for health reasons.

How many tires do you figure it will take for someone that is six foot and 225 lbs? I’ll start saving the road side ones discarded in my area.
