As a friend and shooting companion of several current and retired cops, let me spell this out in plain English:

1. Cops, LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, aren't interested in doing anymore work than they have to.

2. If a cop finishes his shift without talking to a single citizen, he is paid the same amount as if he is in three deadly gunfights and two wrestling matches with people bigger than him.

THEREFORE: There is absolutely no profit in fighting or hassling with anybody unless you must for some reason.

(There will be obligatory post to this one saying, ‘oh yea, will some cop just did (insert something) to me for no reason.’ But in actuality, there always is some reason.)

Much of what goes down between cops and minorities actually follows this pattern.

- Groups of minority youths are hanging around disrupting business and causing the business owners to go broke.

- The business owners constantly call the police complaining.

- Eventually, during the pre shift meeting, the police leadership begins berating the patrols with, ‘do something to get these people to stop callings us.’

Now the stage is set.

The cops will initially ignore these request. After a few more pre shift meetings, they will be forced into doing something. Leading to the inevitable scene on CNN of’ “ we were just standing there doing nothing and suddenly these cops come by and start ordering us around like we was dogs.”

I can assure you that the average cop could be perfectly happy avoiding all of this crap entirely. It is nothing but a risk, a pain in the butt, lots of paperwork, and sometimes worse - and there is no more money in it for them. The bullsh@t that is being sprouted on TV that cops willing do this or enjoy doing this is total crap. If these people had jobs and were off the streets, the LAST people that would complain about it would be cops.

I was riding a bus one night when a jaywalker, dressed in dark clothing, appeared as if out of nowhere. After the driver managed to avoid hitting him, he joked(?) that he was glad that he hadn’t hit the guy because of all the paperwork he’d have needed to do.
