I think this is a kind of accusation that white people hung together in mistreating black people because of color.

That deserves to be analyzed as a hypothesis, but only when the other side gets a reciprocal analysis.

“white people hung together in mistreating black people because of color”

My great great grandpa said, “a man oughta do his own work.” Slavery was a totally foreign concept.

The poor blacks in our area lived in a Gist settlement, you can wiki it, Gist [not sure anymore of the spelling but I am sure you can find it] donated lands in several places so that former slaves etc. would have land of their own to be able to reach the American dream. They were still in poverty when I was growing up, but no, the white people in the area were not mistreating them because of color. My Dad would hire some of them for farm help, treat them like real men and equal to himself, lend them money, as he would also to some down on their luck whites. My Mom called all of them bums, taking food from his own eight kids’ mouths. Yes, some of them stole from us; and I do regret that the family lost some heirlooms to such thefts from an honest man who was only trying to help them. Dad gave them all a chance and the benefit of the doubt. And despite Mom’s legitimate worries (after all she had to pay the bills and balance the check book) we didn’t suffer. Except for the loss of irreplaceable family and historic heirlooms. We wore hand-me-down clothes, ate from the garden and chicken house, but honestly I never thought of myself as poor growing up. Dad is in Heaven in some part because he gave them the benefit of the doubt (in addition to the fact that he was a hard worker, taught his children to be the same, loved til it hurt, etc.) Actually black Tom Turner praised Dad’s farming methods; it was probably the “white trash” that stole our family things.
