It will be a quiet Black Friday on Ferguson's West Florissant Avenue. The modest commercial strip that runs through the heart of the embattled city has been devastated by rioting and looting. Now, a haze of doubt hangs over many workers and merchants there who wonder whether their businesses can survive the terrible toll — and the fear of possible uprisings to come.
Some retailers, like Mohamad Yaacoub, have been slammed twice by violence. His store, Sam's Meat Market, was looted in August after unarmed, 18-year-old Michael Brown was fatally shot by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson. On Monday night, arsonists nearly burned that market to the ground.
"To be honest with you, I'm lost now," Yaacoub told NBC News after touring the charred shell that once was Sam's. The exterior brick walls are the only salvageable chunks. The roof is gone. "I'm not sure money-wise. Money-wise, it's just too hard.
"I had to borrow $700 to buy some wood, just to put the boards together to close up where (the rioters) came in from, to close the building. It's just too much, you know," added Yaacoub, who carries insurance coverage for fire damage but isn't certain when or how much he might be paid to begin a rebuild. A friend launched a fund to help pay for the market's restoration.
At a strip mall two doors down from the remnants of Sam's, looters smashed the glass at the Clip Appeal salon then hurled a Molotov cocktail inside. Two local men grabbed plastic water bottles and dashed inside the shop to try to douse the flames, said Leeanna Moore, a 22-year employee.
While Moore cheered those heroics, she admitted she hasn't decided if she will ever return to work at the salon, which also carries insurance.

I will be driving through Missouri in December, and not only will I not go near Ferguson, I will not go anywhere near St Louis even though it is out of my way.
They should move to a state where the police enforce the law.
the lesson learned here is that the black mobs will be instructed more carefully to not attack black or minority businesses in the future....just burn whitey out....
I disagree. Anything like that will just provoke the idiots into action again. Better to just be quiet about it, keep the business closed, prepare to leave the area, and do so once the insurance has been paid off.
if the "leadership" had come out early and stated that NO violence whatsoever would be tolerated, and that the national guard would be there and the fire dept with hoses to hose down the mobsters......
but no....they equivocated...they left the door wide open...
I believe you are right about the tiny number of actual Fergusonians rioting, but why didn’t they form a human chain?....stand at guard....form their own groups to combat the idiots?
It is a near certainty that Mr. Yaacoob rented his premises.
His losses were his inventory and equipment. He can get a disaster loan and begin again elsewhere with a better lot of customers.

My money says the gumint will do it again. Probably with “zero interest” loans to the blacks but NOT to the whites who lost businesses.
Look for those business to move out to safer locations.

And notice how ALL news stories mention race when the shooter is white and the dead guy is black. But never when the perp is black and the victim non-black.

They should report the race of a person when it’s relevant.

That is on the governor and whomever in the white hut was giving him instructions. The good people of Missouri should be iun search of tar, feathers, and a rail.
