Monday, November 27, 1944 www.onwar.com
In the Norwegian Sea... The German prison ship Rigel is sunk by British carrier planes off the coast of Norway. Of the 2248 Soviet prisoners of war on board, 415 survive.
Over Germany... There are raids nominally aimed at railroad marshalling yards in western Germany. The city of Freiburg is severely damaged in a night raid.
Over Japan... The second B-29 Superfortress bombing raid on Tokyo nominally targets the Musashi aircraft engine plant.
In the Philippines... Around Burauen, on Leyte, Japanese force continue to attack and receive a small number of parachute reinforcements. There is heavy fighting around Burauen airfield. At sea, the battleship USS Colorado and 2 light cruisers are damaged in Kamikaze attacks.
In Washington... Cordell Hull resigns his post as Secretary of State. Edward Stettinius is appointed to succeed him.
Happy Thanksgiving Homer. And thanks again for doing these threads every day. I know there are a lot of FReepers who don’t comment but who read these every day. I appreciate your dedication to this project.
Or the first to bring it to my attention. Sorry, folks.
Happy Thanksgiving 2.0
And in the Ardennes. I must admit I am surprised that the panzer divisions that will take part in the Ardennes Offensive don't show up on the German maps yet. That attack is less than three weeks away. In fact, it had originally been scheduled for December 10 but was postponed. I would have expected to see some indication of the assembly of units on Hitler's own map, but they still show far off the to the northeast, still in "Auffrischung." (Replenishment) The HQs of Manteuffel's 5th Panzer Army is still around Aachen, and the 6th Panzer Army HQ is nowhere to be seen. Very curious.
Alsace-Lorraine. What's left of the German 1st Army is slowly withdrawing to the 1940 German border.
