China signs $3 billion S-400 Triumf contract with Russia

The first-ever contract for exports of the S-400 Triumf air defense missile system has been signed.

"A contract between Rosoboronexport and the Chinese Defense Ministry was signed at the beginning of this fall for the delivery of at least six battalions of S-400 air defense missile systems worth of more than $3 billion," Vedomosti reported on Wednesday.

Negotiations on the delivery of S-400 systems to China had been in progress for several years and the Russian Defense Ministry said in 2011 that exports might begin no earlier than 2016 because the Russian Armed Forces would have to be provided for first, the newspaper said.

"Saudi Arabia's interest in the long-range air defense system was reported again and again but those negotiations came to a halt. The Belarusian Defense Ministry declared its wish to buy the system, and system marketing was done in Libya. The S-400 system was part of the Turkish Armed Forces' tender for air defense systems but it was defeated by the Chinese HQ-2, "a derivative" of Russia's S-300PMU-2. Turkey cancelled the results of that tender in fall 2013 under the pressure from its North Atlantic Alliance partners," the report said.

The S-400 Triumf air defense missile system is a product of the Almaz-Antei Concern and is based on the S-300 long-range air defense system, one of whose major buyers was the People's Liberation Army of China. Rosoboronexport fulfilled the most recent contract for 15 battalions of the S-300PMU-2 air defense missile system in 2010.

Following the breakup of the former Soviet Union, S-300P systems were exported to Vietnam, Algeria, Azerbaijan and Cyprus (the systems delivered to Cyprus have been attached to the Greek Armed Forces) and systems from the Russian Armed Forces' stock were supplied to Kazakhstan and Belarus. The S-300 contract with Iran was cancelled for political reasons in 2010 and the delivery of the air defense missile system to Syria was suspended due to the ongoing civil war. S-300V systems, another modification of S-300P designed for air defense units of the Ground Forces rather than area air defense, were supplied to Venezuela and Egypt.

30 km = about 100,000 feet, not 10,000

Bad news for Taiwan. This thing can probably cover its whole airspace while still deployed in mainland China.

Taiwan is under China zone of influence now. The US has been pushed out.

Taiwan won’t be overtly invaded. It’s not necessary. The PRC will just keep expanding ties and influence until Taiwan accepts some sort of Hong Kong status.

For those that don’t know, the S-400 is a game changer. It’s the kid of weapon that just turning on its radar made our fighter jet skedaddle into Sweden without clearance. We have no countermeasures against it, nothing even in the design phase.

These kinds of things happen when you get a president that infuriates the country that builds it (Russia), while gutting our own defense.

...yet there are still people, ON THIS SITE, that want to start WW3 against them.

Sad for Taiwan, but probably best. We’re pretty much done with defending Asia now, at least until we can fully integrate LGBTs into our military and find the funds to buy Sandra Fluke her damn contraceptives.

Double digit SAM radars are , especially the latest ones. They are difficult to defeat, and the missiles their companion launchers fire are equally as deadly.

This -400 model puts the whole battle management protocol in jeopardy. JSTARS and all the stand off air environment eyes are all vulnerable now.

I agree. It’s understood the US no longer has the capability to project force in the Straits as they did in the 90’s. It’s understood that China will not permit them to do so.

In terms of economic ties, it’s not even a contest.

It was idiotic to push Russia into China’s arms over some Soros putsch in Ukraine. The same old oligarchs are running things there anyhow.

The US has no national interests in Ukraine, which is what should define foreign policy.
