The US Army plans to deploy about 150 tanks and armoured vehicles to NATO countries next year and some of the heavy armour may be stationed in Eastern Europe, a top American general said on Tuesday.

The move is part of a US effort dubbed Operaton Atlantic Resolve in the Baltic states and Poland to reassure allies anxious about a 'resurgent Russia', with American troops deploying for several months at a time to conduct joint exercises.

Nearly 50 armoured vehicles are already in place and another 100 M1 Abrams tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles will be "pre-positioned" in Germany and possibly elsewhere for the US troops conducting drills with NATO partners, Lieutenant General Ben Hodges said in a phone interview from Estonia.

This is good news, NATO needs to be able to fulfill it’s mission.

Did the White House screen “fury”? Loved the movie but if you grunts can help me understand, why would tanks be used in modern warfare?

Is this a good tactic or just flinging assets around to say “so there!”

WHO will end up making use of them, I wonder.

Seems it would be cheaper just to give them to the Poles. They have a couple of armored brigades they need to upgrade from old Soviet equipment.

I looked at this too fast. I thought it read “USA to Deploy 150 Tanks Near Ferguson”...

This is NOT good news. Zero has GUTTED the military. The US no longer has the capability to engage Russia and win.

Would be better to move all those “antique” A-10’s there. That was their primary job after all.

Not with obama as president. He is incapable of not screwing up a situation.

We can't let Russia go unchecked. Under the current circumstances we need to put some assets out there and remind the Russkies who's boss, so to speak.

That said, do we even HAVE 150 tanks these days?

It’s great news, the military isn’t gutted and Russia is no match for NATO.

Get a clue, 142 million population Russia is not the powerhouse that you think it is and I don’t know where you guys came up with that Soviet propaganda, as Russia lacks the ability to fight a large war, conduct large invasions, lacks air power and a real Navy, and still depends largely on 1 year draftees who are poorly trained and equipped.

“Despite the smaller number of U.S. troops in Europe, the military balance there is far more favorable to NATO today than it was when nearly 10 times as many American soldiers, sailors and airmen were stationed on the continent.”

“Consider the situation today. East Germany no longer exists, while Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and every one of Russia’s other erstwhile Warsaw Pact partners are now members of NATO. So are Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, which in 1989 were parts of the Soviet Union itself. In 1989, the Red Army had almost a half-million troops and 27 maneuver divisions (plus enormous quantities of artillery and other units) on the territory of its three main allies. Today, it has a total of seven divisions in its entire Western Military District, all of which are based on its own territory. Indeed, the entire Russian army today boasts about 25 divisions, fewer than it had forward deployed in its Eastern European allies during the waning days of the Cold War.

Today, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Germany alone field more divisions than Russia has in its Western Military District. These countries are backstopped by the rest of NATO, including, of course, the United States.”

Reminds me of the Berlin crisis on 1961 where we faced off against 10 Soviet tanks at the Berlin dividing line for 24 hours.

Problem is Putin can bring up 500 tanks in short order causing Obama to wet his pants.

Yes, this is good news, your chanting “Obama” doesn’t change that, and NATO is not just “Obama”.

Yep. The Worthog is a suburb platform that has proved it's capability in the first Iraq invasion.

Excellent plane.

Putin can instantly put 500 tanks on the Polish border and Poland and NATO and the American Army and Air Force quake in their boots?

No, that isn’t reality.
