Havana -- Fifteen years ago today two fishermen plucked an exhausted, frightened five-year-old tied to an inner tube out of the waters off the coast of Ft. Lauderdale.

Elian Gonzalez, less than two weeks short of his 6th birthday, was the young Cuban boy whose rescue set off an international custody battle and reverberated in the 2000 U.S. presidential campaign.

Now nearly 21 and out of the public eye, Gonzalez is studying industrial engineering at the university in his home province of Matanzas in Cuba.

I felt ashamed of being an American. One of the few times in my life I felt disgust for my country.

If the Obungler was in power at that time, the Mooch would have said that for the first time, she was proud of her country.

Wiki downplays how the Vietnamese Communists used her as a propaganda tool and how she had to work to escape a “worker’s paradise”.

Perhaps Elian has been conditioned to enjoy the situation. Perhaps he is rewarded. Perhaps he is limited in his words and actions.

Some enterprising young fellow needs to take matters into his own hands with these two scum bags. The world would never miss them. The Cuban people would never miss them. Would I be using extremely poor taste, if I said I long for the day these two POS commie bastards assume room temperature? What I wonder, however, is, would their much anticipated demise mean the end of communism in Cuba?

I thought they meant a rescue from the intertube, but I guess they meant the kidnapping.

Still waiting for word on how deporting him broke the logjam of US custody cases in foreign counties. The send him back crowd here assured us it would. Never heard a peep about any of those ever again.

When communism collapsed in Eastern Europe - there was a confident, democratic, free-market USA on hand to help the newly free countries.

(((
Problem was we had progressives handling things in the USA, as this was during the Clinton Infestation.

"Thanks, GOP-e, for failing to impeach and convict"

You're loosing track of history. It was the GOP that impeached Clinton. It was Democrats in the Senate that failed to convict him.

The GOP-e would not have bothered to persuade the remaining blue dogs back then either way.

RE Upper Pic:
Wonder where Helmet Guy is today, and if he ever thinks about pointing his Little German Submachine Gun at a 6 year old kid... at least his finger was off the trigger...

RE Lower Pic:
Looks like Elain was in the Cuban version of the Komsomol...
Mandatory for kids in communist countries, I believe. Or is that a Cuban military uniform?

Wow - talk about irony, huh!?! Spot-on, dfwgator...

You think that helped Clinton?

I don’t really care, sometimes you have to stand on principle, kidnapping a kid at gun point who’s mom died bringing him here and sending him back to commieland is not cool. F his father’s rights, no one in Cuba has rights.

If I were Jeb Bush I’d have started a civil war over that, had state police (not national guard) and maybe some Cuban American street hoods surround that House. Make Reno go Ruby Ridge, see how that plays in the media. Nasty *ss d*ke w*ore.

Really we had no excuse after the Cold War ended for not sending someone to pump the Castro bros full of lead. If I were President I’d give the order in the opening line of my inauguration speech.

Sorry, I misjudged your comment. You haven't lost track of history, you've lost track of reality.

RE “...kidnapping a kid at gun point who’s mom died bringing him here and sending him back to commieland is not cool...”

One of the reason we’re here is to PROTECT people like that...

RE “...we had no excuse after the Cold War ended for not sending someone to pump the Castro bros full of lead...”

Ditto.

RE “...had state police (not national guard) and maybe some Cuban American street hoods surround that House...”

Ditto. But then again, Jeb let Terry Schiavo be killed too.
