There was a DA in New York City who would take the completely different approach. He was a leftist at heart, but he knew how to play a political game in criminal courts. In cases of questionable police shootings he'd charge the cops with murder and steer clear of any manslaughter charges. This way he knew he'd never get a conviction, which meant he kept the police out of jail but placated the professional malcontents in his district. Go figure.

I’m going to avoid looking at thuggish faced black men and women for a while, in the aftermath of Ferguson. Anger and rage, day after day, is just plain ugly on so many levels.

I think I would die if I stoked that energy within my mind and guts around a heap of self deception every day. If this happened to me - a police officer shot and killed my son - I would be horrified and sorrowful to lose him. At the same time, I would have to confront the truth that my son was a thug who robbed a store and beat up the police man before getting shot by him. I would have been mad at myself for allowing him to sing rap about killing cops and taking on the act of a thug.

In the end, I would have to forgive my son, myself and the cop. I think my face during this process would appear broken rather than aggressive, proud and angry. If I honestly felt that I lived in a place with racist cops endangering my children, I’d move. But if I lived with a boy who mistook himself as a rebellious, bulling, racist thug, I would be riding roughshod. That kid would be sorry he was born before he even knew the meaning of “police officer.”
