Why people vote Republican but support liberal policies (lib spin!)

A funny thing happened in five states on election night. In Alaska, Arkansas, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota, a majority of voters surveyed their choices of candidates and ballot initiatives, and chose a Republican candidate along with a liberal position on a ballot initiative.

Alaska elected a Republican senator and passed a recreational marijuana initiative, along with an increase in the minimum wage. North Dakota elected a Republican congressman and rejected a Personhood amendment. Arkansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota elected a Republican senator and governor, and passed a minimum wage increase. This led Zachary Goldfarb to write: “Americans will vote for Republicans even though they disagree with them on everything.”

we need to keep a viable nation.... I believe in most individual liberties.

but staying in a drug induced stupor at the expense of the nation is not one of them. I am not sure how to legislate moderation. very sticky subject.

as a libertarian I assume you do not believe in welfare or most other social programs that bleed society (neither do I). but those programs currently exist. Therefore I would suggest that as long as they do exist, those who take advantage of my tax dollar funded freebies, not be eligible if they are substance abusers of any stripe (booze included) and would be required to take a urine and/or blood test to prove it at the time they sign for their check and/or service.

Actually, as someone who is not really a libertarian, but can relate to some of the libertarian ideas, I could get on board with that. I’ve even thought it should go further; for women on welfare, you get your monthly birth control shot, then you get your check. No more gaming the system by having babies to increase your handout. If you want another kid, get yourself a job and get off the dole.

You’d be correct: No safety net; that drugged stupor you reference would matter not; nor would I need to worry about $$ spend on booze/smokes/etc. If biz/someone wishes to give their own property....be my guest. No drug test would be needed, unless those giving out so required.

Assuaging ones own guilt by using the power/force of gov’t to steal for those whom WON’T work is morally worse, IMHO.

You note a ‘viable’ nation...please define. We currently lack the reproduction numbers; we are already non-viable (mostly BECAUSE of anti-Liberty/Freedom gov’t)? Gov’t has a 120T+ unfunded liabilities debt. Again, non-viable.

Unfort., even here, there are a number of busy-body nanny-staters...As long as it is THEM being the King, there’s no wrong.

As the safety net exists. It behooves me to make rules that would require leeches upon society to toe a line if they would continue to be on the dole. As we can’t eliminate all give-always at once, behavior restrictions should be implemented to limit the lossesl.

as far as procreation. When I was in HS there was just about 200 million people in America. We can send back all the muzzies and other losers we have let in since then that has made the population around 300 millions. 200 mil was enough.

Absolutely - and people not taking taxpayer money should be free to do as they choose with their bloodstreams.

We ‘can’t’ get rid of give-aways @ once? Were they not created and implemented ‘immediately’ (IE: They magically began, but cannot disappear the same way)??

Why should illegal programs/laws/regs/etc. be winded-down? Why give gov’t the CHANCE to renig on restoring our Rights/Liberty/Freedom? No, they should be abolished, cut down, ground up and nuked from orbit..it’s the only way.

We have plenty of room for LEGAL immigration; 300M+ can be handled. Especially if/when we return to our Republic roots.

I prefer less. The cities are the death of America. All that’s liberal and evil emanates from crowded progressive holes. Less than 200M would suit me fine
