FWIW, I'd wait to make a judgement on this story. There's a lot of context, involving too heavy handed police responses on one hand and on the other extreme neighborhoods without much police presence.

It's an environment where even the child should know it's not wise to walk around with something that looks like a real gun.

“Model 1911’s that look like the one in the picture aren’t that common. It looks phony to me from the get go.I would have asked the kid what was going on with that pistol. He probably would have replied and be alive. The cops aren’t kings they shouldn’t expect to be instantly obeyed especially by 12 year kids. They get paid to take risk that’s part of the meaning of “To Protect and Serve “. If someone can’t handle that they shouldn’t become police officers.”

Well said...

I agree.

It really bothered me from the "get go" with Ferguson that everyone "knew the facts" before any investigation had been done.

“Quick, split second is the gun real?....BANG! You’re dead. That is how much time cops have to decide.”

No, immediately drop to the ground... And if it’s real he’s going to miss.

Actually he’s correct... If there was a kid pointing a gun at you (that reasonably would be a toy) when you went out to get your morning paper, you wouldn’t shoot him, I wouldn’t shoot him and neither would any sane adult.

No he is not correct and neither are you. Your comparison falls far short of being applicable. This cop wasn't going out to get the morning paper, and it wasn't in my yard. The cop was responding to a call of someone brandishing a gun in a park, something that, in Cleveland, could mean gang activity or any number of things.

Should he have shot? Maybe not. I think it's possible he could have sought cover behind a car or a tree. But I wasn't there, nor was the poster who said it is a "fact" that "most" cops join the force so they can ""...come to work everyday and want to use force on anybody". That was a moronic statement at best, and one that he lacks any real evidence to support.

I would fear any firearm if I was certain it was a firearm and it was being pointed at me or anyone. But if it is a kid holding it my first thought is it may be a replica, airgun or just a stupid kid. Now the story said the kid hadn’t pointed it at anyone and if this is so then there was time for more discernment by way of communication. Albeit not much time, but a decision to shoot is unalterable once taken. I firmly believe it is the duty of a police officer to accept some risk especially when a kid is involved. You would be right to say I was not there so I could not know what was the right thing to do. However, there seems to be too many instances of police shooting first and asking questions latter. This may be due to poor training, equipment, or the wrong type of person being a police officer. All this has sure shaken my confidence that the police will do the right thing.

If the cops don’t start showing a little restraint, the rules of engagement may well have to be changes so they can’t fire until fired upon.

If the caller was “pretty sure it was a fake”. She shouldn’t have called the police. She should have just walked up and taken it from him. She didn’t...why? Wait for it.... She could be sure, and neither could the responding officers.

You will know them by their fruit. The police are not the publics friend or here to serve the public. The whole protect and serve mentality is gone except for a few rare places.

They are, but that is only for point of sale...

Once it is purchased, the owners can remove the tips or paint them or put electrical tape over them.

I see it at airsoft fields all the time...no one wants to get whacked by a bb because they exposed their position as a result of the orange tip.

Even new "BB guns" do not have orange tips.... Soft air guns perhaps, but not .17cal. BB guns….

Okay. I haven't been shopping for one lately. Here's a video showing the Daisy Powerline 990 rifle that I own, it's dual powered either CO2 or pump, uses .177 BBs or pellets. It looks like a real rifle, and it's pretty accurate and powerful when pumped a dozen times (eight to ten pumps are sufficient), way more so than the CO2 pistol I have which looks deadly but isn't.

I have NO IDEA of what the kids body language “expressed” when he pulled THE TOY...or what he may or may not have said.

Maybe you need to read the article again, specifically the part about what the police supervisor said: "Tomba said the child did not threaten the officer verbally or physically."

I won’t second guess the cop because i didnt witness the entire event.

What's one dead kid, more or less?

If they are that panicky and trigger-happy around 12 year old children then maybe they're in the wrong profession?

Wonder how much revenue the collector thought he could collect by shooting this kid?

Officer has to be black or this would be everywhere and have been fully exploited be now. Black life is only important if a white person does the shooting. Otherwise it is a political tool used to divide and conquer /control.

In the 70’s my BIL was a cop. Changed over the few years on the force. Came by my house in his cruiser one day, pulled a pistol wrapped in plastic out from under his seat. Said it was his throw down, and all the cops carried one. I had never heard of one.
A few months later he quit. I went to school with him for years before he married my sister. I asked him why. He said he realized he had developed the “Cop Attitude”. Everyone was a cop (included immediate families) or a perp. Perps had either broken the law, or would someday. Which was I? While he was a cop, I was a Perp. He said he spent his nights with cops, dranks with cops, and socialized with cops. He said all the cops he knew felt that way. This was in a city of over 150,000.

I believe I acknowledged I know there are some cops who break the law. But I was responding to a posters inane comment that said "most" join the force so they can do such things. That was an incredibly moronic comment.

You said your BIL "was" a cop. For someone who is not in LE I have probably spent more time with people who are than anyone you will know. It is as moronic and untrue to say "most" cops think that way as it is to say all gun owners are crazed killers who want to harm innocent people. That opinion is based on perception, not reality. I live in reality.
