Winston: Ref contact not malicious (Watch and you decide)

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher and quarterback Jameis Winston said there was nothing malicious about the contact between the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and an official in the third quarter of the Seminoles' 20-17 win against Boston College on Saturday.

With the scored tied at 17-17 and 5:20 left in the third quarter, an official stood between Winston and center Cam Erving to prevent the Seminoles (No. 3 CFP, No. 1 AP) from running their next play. An official is instructed to stand over the ball to prevent the offense from snapping it until the defense has sufficient time to match the offense's substitutions. The center judge was not standing over the football, however, and Erving was already set with his hand on the ball.

ESPN Jameis Winston jostled with a referee as the FSU star was trying to get to the line for a quick snap.

Winston tried moving the official with his hand and arm before the center judge retreated to his normal position on the field.

"He was just holding me because he said we had a substitution," Winston said of the official. "It was actually a fast-tempo play, so I was trying to get up under there and let it ride."

Fisher said the play call was for Winston to snap the ball quickly after the previous play, but the official ruled Florida State made a substitution at running back, the coach said he was told.

"I don't think [Winston] realized it. He was caught up in the excitement of the moment," Fisher said. "Hey, you get emotional.

Fisher said he didn't talk to Winston about the contact, which he felt was innocuous and unintentional.

I’m not seeing it. The QB’s team was lining up, clock was running. What the hell was ref doing between QB and the Center anyway?

Being a born and raised Floridian I always had FSU as a favorite, going back to Coach Peterson, Bobby Bowden.

But that has all changed thanks to Jameis Winston and the present coaching staff that have allowed his criminal antics to go unpunished.

I don’t even watch them on TV now and was rooting for Boston College to beat them yesterday.

One cannot tell from the clip about the timing of the substitution, but the center is over the ball. Maybe Free Shoes U had run in a late sub. What normally happens is that an official places the ball down and then moves into his position.

If all the officials are in their normal position, then the closest one to the ball is in the backfield. Getting over the ball in that situation is pretty tough. Holding up the snap, in compliance with the rule, is the operative principle here.

The official was out of position. He should have been standing over the ball.

If FSU subbed a player in a hurry-up situation they made a big mistake - have to allow the D to sub then.

i watched the game....the official did nothing to inform Winston what was happening, just got in his way and interfered with him during the waning moments of a tight game...you may not agree with Winston’s actions but the official was incorrect as well...and for the record I wanted BC to win the game...

Fisher said he didn't talk to Winston about the contact, which he felt was innocuous and unintentional.

The same thing he (Fisher) said about the rape, the shoplifting of steak and lobster, the vandalism, the obscene outburst, etc.

This Fisher dipshit will excuse anything that the thug does, all for the glory of a championship series.

Disgusting.

It appeared to me the defensive players were still moving into place. I heard it discussed and saw the replay on one of the post game shows and it was stated that by the rules FSU should have been penalized and jamis “The THug” winston should have been ejected from the game but we know that some have a different set of rules. Probably celebrated after the game with a stolen lobster and rape.

LOL- the quarterback understands to relay the play to his teammates in the huddle, get to the line of scrimmage either in shotgun formation or underneath center and call the signals, regardless of a referee muscling his way into the scene without explanation...

Doesn’t matter if the official was out of position or not, it’s supposed to be a penalty and ejection for what winston did. He purposly made contact with the official.

What is the LOL about? You do realize that no teams do a huddle any more? Do you even know what the substitution rule is? It’s been covered several times on the thread.

Should have said many or most do not huddle. Does Free Shoes U huddle? Again, do you understand the substitution rule?
