Illegal Immigration: Jimmy Carter Did This To Us, Too.

I was talking to my Grandma about Obama's executive order granting amnesty to what will turn out to be about 50 million illegal immigrants. And she just laughed at me. Then she told me about the Mariel Boatlift. During Jimmy Carter's term as president, he went on TV and said: "We open our arms and our hearts to the Cuban people." And they came. Millions upon millions of them. In rickety homemade boats, on jetskis, even in ingeniously crafted floating cars. Cuban refugees just poured into Miami and Key West, and completely swamped the immigration authorities in those areas. And Fidel Castro, that crafty old demon, emptied out all of his prisons, insane asylums and orphanages. And his soldiers forced all of those degenerates onto boats at gunpoint and shipped them to Miami. At that time Miami was the jewel of the East Coast, a prime tourist destination. Almost overnight it became a huge crime-ridden, drug-infested ghetto. Even the cops couldn't take it. They pulled up roots, grabbed their families and fled north to find cleaner cities to work in. And they were replaced by Cuban immigrants. But this new breed of cops had grown up in Fidel's communist regime, and corruption was a way of life to them. They dealt drugs, and even robbed and killed their own people. There was even a saying back then: "Will the last American leaving Miami please bring the U.S. flag?" It got so bad that the only Americans left in Miami were the desperately poor and the super-rich, who were exploiting the immigrants for slave labor. But Miami did clean up its act, eventually. Somehow a lot of conservatives got into positions of power, and most of those corrupt Cuban cops are in prison now. And the second and third generations of the Mariel Boatlift Cubans are Americans now. They have no accents, and you can't even tell them apart from the rest of US.

30,000, I believe. And Clinton blamed it for his losing the governorship that year.

130 thousand. Part of cold war chess match. Led to Governor Clinton losing in Arkansas where they were dumped. Castro just ‘flushed his toilet.’ Jails and mental hospitals emptied. I’m sure most of them were ok. 15 years later Elian Gonzales? Clinton learned his lesson. Coward.

About 10 days in to the Mariel Boatlift, the weather turned ugly.
Winds got high and storms hit the Florida coast.
On about day 14 I went offshore fishing out the Fort Pierce inlet and we headed east southeast.
We found 11 homebuilt rafts that day with NO people on them.
We fished the platforms as they work sort of like an umbrella that fish congregate under to get away from the suns heat.
Dolphin, triple tail, Wahoo and a sail of tow.
We had a great day fishing BUT we kept finding rafts and felt obligated to check to see if anyone were alive. We found nothing.
The rafts were such that I wouldn’t take one across the Indian River much less 90 or 100 miles of open ocean.

The US has (almost) always granted asylum to political refugees - those otherwise suffering under oppressive regimes.

Those folks crossing our southern border generally do not fall into this catagory.

And if they do we have laws for this sort of thing...

They have no accents, and you can't even tell them apart from the rest of US.

And approximately 70% vote democrat. Even the 2nd and 3rd generation Cubans lean democrat.

I lived in Miami at the time. A fellow who worked for us was shot and killed by a man Castro had released from prison just 24 hours before. He was quickly arrested and found with a $100 bill and a gun.

Castro's Mariel gambits on steroids.

Engineered Migration as a Coercive Instrument
"This paper argues that Castro launched the crisis in an attempt to manipulate the US’s fears of another Mariel boatlift, in order to compel a shift in United States (US) policy, both on immigration and on a wider variety of issues. As the end of the crisis brought with it a radical redefinition of US immigration policy toward Cuba, the paper further contends that from Castro’s perspective, this exercise in coercion proved a qualified success—his third such successful use of the Cuban people as an asymmetric political weapon against the US. "

An interesting comparison in miniature, since it makes the end result insofar as culture is concerned in the demographics of Miami. Not bad, if, like me, you like the Cuban people. Fit for Cubans, though it isn't the United States any longer culturally.

I wouldn't want to compare Cubanos with the possible tsunami of people from everywhere from McAllen, Texas to Tierra del Fuego, and beyond.

And Carter's weakness is to blame, but I would not wish to diminish the criminality of Fidel Castro, who turned out his own definition of "undesirables" onto the Florida Straits. And it was 80,000.

(Why is he still breathing the same air as the rest of us?)

Boy do I remember. My unit was at Camp McCoy, WI when the "refugees" started arriving. The government couldn't move fast enough to throw our asses out of the cantonment area so that they could dump millions of dollars into improvements to the very barracks that we stayed in every AT cycle. They weren't up to standards for non-citizens, you know!

Until that summer, the government never had any funds for improvements to Camp McCoy. When the future RAT voters arrived, they couldn't spend the money fast enough to accommodate them!

No, not the Cuban-Americans. Most of them are extremely conservative. Their parents witnessed Communism first-hand, and they will never, ever let their children forget what it was like for them growing up.

A lot went to the barracks at Fort Chaffee.

Pulled just about every Spanish Speaker from the SF Troops at Ft Bragg. They did not have a fun trip.

As I recall, Castro emptied his prisons of thugs, thieves and criminals as well as the mental hospitals.

He didn’t say “Vanity Fair”, he said “Vanity”, which means it’s something he wrote himself. This IS the article.

*** Led to Governor Clinton losing in Arkansas where they were dumped.***

I remember that. Many were sent to Fort Chaffee Arkansas near Fort Smith. One night the Cubans broke out and took over the town of Barling, for a while.

This may sound radical, but I wish we could take Cuba. Just invade it, take over, and make it part of the USA. I mean, just look at it. It’s right there, and it looks like it’s supposed to be part of this country. And if we owned it, we could turn it into the island paradise that it is supposed to be. Instead of the Third World hellhole that the communists turned it into.
