Emily Thornberry has resigned from Labour's front bench after sending a tweet during the Rochester and Strood by-election which was branded "snobby".
The shadow attorney general apologised for the message, which showed a terraced house with three England flags, and a white van parked outside.
UKIP said she had "sneered, and looked down her nose at a white van in Strood with the cross of St George on it".
Labour leader Ed Miliband was "angry" at her, a senior figure told the BBC.
The resident of the house, Dan Ware, said Ms Thornberry - the MP for Islington South and Finsbury - was a "snob".
"I've not got a clue who she is - but she's a snob," he told the Sun. "We put the flags up for the World Cup (in 2014) and will continue to fly them."

But Mr Farage suggested the episode reflected broader attitudes within parts of the Labour Party.
The Labour Party hate the concept of Englishness, he told the BBC News Channel. They have done for a very long time.
New Labour cant even stand the concept of patriotism. They think the flag somehow is unpleasant, backward-looking and nasty. People like Emily Thornberry would rather we had that blue flag with 12 stars on it that comes to us from Brussels.

Why We Should ALL Be Celebrating Today’s UKIP Triumph in Rochester and Strood
Labour is supposed to be the party of the working man, but all the leaders are wealthy elites. How did this all happen. This is why the white working class is switching to UKIP.
Labour is bleeding white supporters just as the Democrats are in the US.
The democrats are our labour party.
Go Nigel!
She quit? what did she quit? she resigned from Parliament or just from the “front bench” - whatever that means?
I confused. Was there some text which went with that tweet which was “snobby”? Or is this type of house with a white van a symbol of something in England like if a Democrat sent out a picture of a shotgun toting hillbilly with a still and a caption “Mitch McConnell voter”?
They call them ‘champagne socialists’ in the UK. We should co-opt that and broaden its use.
Too bad Nigel Farage can’t be President here as he is a foreigner.....
oh, wait, we have barry soetoro...
“White van men” in England.

Ran across this a while back. I guess it’s their equivalent of bitter clingers.
The trouble is, so is Nigel FARAGE. He is a privately educated former city trader, not a grocer’s daughter or former coal miner like some past prime minsters.
aka “Limousine Liberals” in the US.

Its not entirely dissimilar. White van man is roughly synonymous with no nonsense working class men. The flag is hated by the Left here even more than by the Left in the States. It was silly of this politician to post the pic, and silly for her to have to resign. Though im fairly sure she was kinda pushed out.
Her having to resign probably says a lot about just how nervous the Labour Party are of losing even more working class voters. Of how out of touch they appear.
Interesting. UKIP sounds a bit like the Tea Party.
This liberal is a sweat hog.
