Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) wants Republicans to reverse the Democrats' filibuster reforms in the new year, arguing that doing so will make it tougher for President Barack Obama to get his nominees approved.
The new system requires just 51 votes to advance executive branch nominees and judges nominated for all courts except the Supreme Court, instead of the 60 votes that were previously required. Democrats approved the reforms after Republicans were refusing to let many of Obama's nominees go through. Half the nominees filibustered in the country's history, for example, were blocked by Republicans during the Obama administration.

But that's the new rule under the Reid doctrine. If you have a Senate that is the same party as the President, you only need 51 votes. If they are different parties, you need 60. For us, it's great if you have a Republican President and Senate. It's great for the dems if they are both democrats. Otherwise, it sucks. But I didn't make the rule. Harry did. And that's how it should be from now on, unless the democrats who made the rule want to take it back when they hold both the Presidency and the Senate. I'm not holding my breath for that so screw them.
GTH, Linda.
Exactly. Why should Republicans reverse it when they will have the majority. Rules should be the same for both parties.
Yes, shut up Goober.
A 50 vote threshold requires 4 RINOs to cross.
A 60 vote threshold requires 14 RINOs to cross.
It’s simple math. I like the 60 threshold a lot better because it’s higher to reach.
I also think there needs to be an active response to what Reid did. No more Obama nominees get confirmed. Period. A 60 vote threshold allows rank and file Senators (like Cruz) to better enforce that over the wishes of McConnell and leadership.
If the President is not a Republican why will this rule cause the Democrats to choke?
Yes, THIS>
Just like a broke clock that is right twice a day, Little Lindsey Graham is right occasionally. He’s right about restoring the 60 vote closure rule for judicial nominees.
Because we change it right back to 51 the day a Republican President is sworn in. That’s the fallout from Reid’s rule. When the President and Senate are the same party, the threshold is 51. Different parties, it’s 60. It’s his rule, let him choke on it.
I’m still expecting Linda Gramnasty and her boyfriend Jaun McCainasty to defect to the dems being republicans are so mean and their excessive numbers are just not fair.
Why didn’t the Democrats make that argument, because you know, the Republicans have the majority now.
First, immediately restore the filibuster for all presidential appointments or at the very least for judicial appointments. That way any 40 Republicans can block any of Obama’s far left wing judicial appointments. Obama’s judges will be legislating from the bench for the next 30 years. They need to be blocked.
Next, either abolish the filibuster for legislation or make Democrats who want to filibuster legislation do a good old fashioned “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” talk until you drop filibuster. That way the Republican controlled House and Senate can push through any legislation that they want.
Sure, Obama will veto most of it. So make Obama spend the next two years obstructing progress. It will be hard for the Democrats to complain in the next election about a “do nothing” Congress if Congress is regularly sending bills to Obama and he is vetoing them all.
Yes, the Democrats and the lamestream press will scream bloody murder. No, the Republicans should not give a crap.
Take a page from Harry Reid’s playbook. Do whatever will help Republicans and hurt Democrats. Don’t worry about what will happen when the Democrats someday retake control over the Senate. Clearly, the Democrats will do whatever they want regardless of what the Republicans do or do not do to them.

Well said .... and it bears repeating. Restore the 60 vote threshold for closure; make RINOs come out of the closet if they want to betray us.
Harry Reid set a very dangerous precedent when he did what he did. I’m sure he didn’t give a rat’s buttocks because he just wanted the power right now. He doesn’t care about what happens after he’s dead and the worms feast on his decaying corpse. A day which cannot come soon enough.
JUST. SHUT. UP.
The Republicans should go medieval from now on. Reduce the office budgets of all the Dems. Put Harry Reid in the closest men’s room and tell him it’s his new office. Give no quarter. Punish them!
I agree...not sure why everyone is spazzing out...guess they haven't thought it through.
Come on people...USE YOUR HEADS. If BHO sends a nominee, how is 51 votes to move him through a good thing? You would only need 5 or 6 RINOS to get him/her through. If we move it back to 60...they have to round up 16 RINOS....which is a lot tougher feat...
Come on folks...think critically and not knee-jerk.
what in heavens name is wrong with the posters here...that would want to keep it at 51 votes...CHANGE IT BACK TO 60 VOTES.
YES RESTORE THE SENATE FILIBUSTER RULES THAT DEMOCRAT HARRY REID CHANGED TO BENEFIT HUSSEIN OBAMA...
WOW...FR has changed...
posters here use to support Republican’s and Conservatives...doesn’t seem that way any longer...
Well, normally I would argue that reinstating the old rules would allow the demoncrats to philbuster the GOP on anything they want to do, but since they don’t want to do anything, I guess it doesn’t matter.
