SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Ten years after banning the use of firing squads in state executions, Utah lawmakers on Wednesday endorsed a proposal to allow the practice again to avoid problems with lethal-injection drugs.
The proposal from Republican Rep. Paul Ray of Clearfield would call for a firing squad if the state cannot obtain the lethal injection drugs 30 days before the scheduled execution.
Utah dropped firing squads out of concern about the media attention, but Ray said it's the most humane way to execute someone because the inmate dies instantly.

I agree totally but for the life of me I do not understand why the various states use methods of execution that are sometimes not effective.
It is not difficult to kill someone effectively and quickly without pain and at the same time not inflict violence on the body.
It can be done cheaply, effectively, painlessly and humanely. In addition it does not need the intervention of medical personnel nor the use of prescription drugs. The use of prescription drugs is controversial as is the use of medical personnel. The problem is the hippocratic oath. I respect that oath and will also abide by it.
The easiest and most effective way to put someone to death is "Freon." Freon the refrigerant is also a very powerful anesthetic. In fact chemical analogs of freon are used in anesthesia.
At high levels Freon will also cause heart arrhythmias. Put the bad guy in a chamber, and open a 25 pound bottle of Freon. The bad guy goes to sleep and his heart goes into an arrhythmia and he is dead.
But he knew from personal experience that shooting was hard to screw up.
In the summer of 1976, three months after he had served 11 years for armed robbery, Gilmore robbed and killed Orem service station attendant Max Jensen, 24, and Provo motel manager Bennie Bushnell, 25 on successive nights. The young men were ordered to lie down and then were shot in the head. Both were students at Brigham Young University; both left widows with infants. Debbie Bushnell, who held her husband's head in her lap as he died, gave birth to the couple's second child a few weeks after Gilmore's execution.
I think that CO2 would work just as well.

Or even better die how their victoms did.
Revenge is mine, saith the Lord. Why should we commit the same crimes they did ? How will that fix anything ?
The issue is that we have decided they can no longer be left alive, and the best thing is to do it, and do it quickly.
I'd go for it if they let you smoke a cigarette.
I’ve heard about botched, slow, ugly hangings. Not botched firing squads. Except for the Romanovs, but not many prisoners are wearing diamond-lined undergarments.
If I were being executed, I’d want the firing squad.
And I hate the perversion of medicine with lethal injections.
Rope wasn’t invented to kill people with; neither was electricity. Guns were.
Uh... EPA. No permit, no freon. Then if you got it , it would he that new crappy freon and the condemned would probably suffer for a while before dying.
CO2 build up in the blood stream causes the sensation of oxygen deprivation. Using Nitrogen does not cause that effect. With nitrogen, the condemned just passes out. So that keeps the lawyers out of the picture. No “cruel and unusual” arguments.
Well, yeah, back when things were handmade or cobbled together at the last moment that stuff does happen.
I'm pretty sure that now that we've been to the Moon, we can tie a rope correctly, coat it with teflon if necessary, and design a trap door that opens when we pull the lever.
Nasty way to go. I'd take nitrogen or helium asphyxiation any day.

I’ve never been subjected to either one, just know that CO2 is an effective killer because of the natural occurences with lakes. I also know that freon does the same thing. Freon is, or was used as a fire extinguisher in some environments (computer rooms) and if the freon dumped, you had to get out.
Some of that unwanted "media attention" was specifically on the Mormon historical belief in "blood atonement" and it's connection to firing squads being offered as a method of execution in the mostly-Mormon state.

Was the fire suppressant freon or was it halon?
I think public hanging for any state execution would be a good thing. It is fast, relatively quiet and earth friendly.
