Every State is required to be of a republican nature, as per Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution.

“The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, [...]”

Can a republican form of government be turned into a socialist form of government and remain a republican form of government, in the American sense of the word?

Sounds like an oxymoron to me.

Art IV Sec 4:

The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government
