Kurtz: Did media protect Bill Cosby because of politics? Never autoplay videos
With Bill Cosby's rape allegations once again in the headlines, some of his old jokes are now being unearthed and scrutinized.
After two women have recently come forward claiming to have been drugged and raped by the comedian, a joke from Cosby's 1969 album It's True! It's True! has been making the rounds. In the stand-up recording, he recounts a story of being a 13-year-old boy and learning that (allegedly) when you slip "Spanish fly" into a woman's drink, it will make her more susceptible to a man's advances.

The “Spanish fly” is a genuine piece of Americana, and we talked of it in my grade school years. The idea was it made them “hot for it”. Some older kid would know all about it. I don’t think this has anything to do with a “rape drug” per se.
I don’t know whether this really means anything. When I was a boy in prep school, back in the 1940s and 50s, there were running jokes about Spanish Fly. No one really knew what it was, but it was thought to be clever to joke about it.
I doubt there was a teenage boy in the 60s that didn’t know what Spanish Fly was.
Yeah and “salt Peter” does the opposite. LOL this is funny if someone is making a serious claim based on this comment .
Everyone knew the cooks put salt peter in the food at all the boys schools.......
It's a huge leap to think that bit is related to the rape allegations...which if true, are a heartbreaking disappointment.
Whats all this piling on to bill cosby all of the sudden? Did he forget to make a donation to the DNC?
“The gist of the joke was that a cab driver in Mexico asked him if he had any American Fly. “
IIRC, it was on one of his early albums.
Yeah, I remember the saltpeter jokes, too. One of the first things I heard when I arrived at prep school was that the Headmaster ordered the cooks to put it in our food.
This is one of those cases where following traditional social customs which assume men are prone to temptation and that female virtue matterscould have saved someone a world of trouble.
From the number of claims popping up, it looks as if he was pretty indiscriminate. You just know there were other women who just said, "No thanks." I'll guess their lives turned out better.
Character assassination is all the left has right now.
Even the drugged ones, or the one who filed a police report in 2000, or the one from 2004 that Cosby settled with after they found 14 more who would testify to his assaults?
I happened to see Coz on one of the late night shows recently and the guy had trouble maintaining his train of thought. FWIW.
"Unearthed" on an album? Great investigative journalism there.
I’m gonna go ahead and presume he’s innocent until some proof shows up.
Reporting this comedy routine as evidence that he drugged women is pretty ridiculous. He was making fun of the stupidity of adolescent boys.
MSM loves to destroy a hero.
The MSM is trashing Cosby for his remarks on the state of the black condition as it offended some in the government. And the bit was entirely just that, a joke about spanish fly, not actually using it in a real sense. Jeez, they’re reaching with this one, folks!
