I expect you are right. After all, the restaurant sent the couple home with a takeout meal without any safety training or written instructions about not leaving it out overnight before eating it. Reckless negligence.
Cracker Barrel has excellent food and friendly service.

If you thing Cracker Barrel is excellent food and service, then we are just going to have to disagree. It is marginally better than Bob Evans, but it doesn’t reach “excellent” on either of those offerings.
I'm surprised hundreds of people don't die every day after eating at a restaurant.

Cracker barrel can’t be beat by anyone. I know how stringent they are on cleanliness, cooking, salad, good service. I know because I slaved for them for 3 yrs.
This country needs more meatloaf!
HJ, I suggest that if the food and service is subpar at the Cracker Barrel you patronized was that bad, then you should report them to headquarters in Lebanon, TN. Believe me they would send someone to correct the problems ASAP.
Bob Evans was good in 2005; what happened later is unknown to me. Cracker Barrel is no higher than any other place, is it? It has particularly good tea, catfish, pork chops, green beans, lima beans, quite a few things.
I didn’t see anything WRT a lab report on the suspect food; did I miss something?

That statement is nonsense!
Most e-coli infections are from fecally tainted produce, particularly spinach or leafy lettuce. People eat hundreds of tons of rare hamburger every day, and problems are very rare.
E-coli bacteria are essential to life, you cannot live without them. Lack of e-coli is the most common cause of the intestinal distress from using antibiotics. E-coli is a part of your immune system.
If you had bothered to read the full text from which the quotation was taken rom and linked, you would have seen the source of the quotation said the same thing. So, your complaint is errant nonsense because you jumped to an entirely wrong conclusion for a lack of reading.
Then why did you knowingly post the nonsense?

The topic of the article is the lawsuit which alleges the beef meatloaf dinner takeout from a Bob Evans restaurant caused the elderly man and wife to suffer illness as a result of food poisoning by an E. coli contamination.
The medical professionals at WebMD stated: “A new report shows cases of E. coli O157:H7 infections, one of the most severe food-borne illnesses, dropped by 36% from 2002 to 2003. Most illnesses caused by E. coli infections are the result of eating undercooked, contaminated ground beef.”

You obviously failed to read and comprehend the subject matter of this discussion thread, when you failed to recognize the difference between the lawsuit talking about the illness caused by the alleged E. coli contamination of the Bob Evans meatloaf dinner and the WebMD comment “Most illnesses caused by E. coli infections” versus your changing of the subject to talk about the number of all E. coli infections, and not just the most common North American causes of E. coli illnesses.
The lawsuit and the WebMD are talking about the number of E. coli illnesses. The vast majority of E. coli infections, i.e. non-STEC 0157, do not cause serious illness.
WebMD says: Most illnesses caused by E. coli infections are the result of eating undercooked, contaminated ground beef.”

Meatloaf at Bob Evans? My mother's meatloaf almost killed me.......It did the dog which I fed under the table when mom wasn't looking.
