501C3 has been the doom of churches for a long time. It controls what a preacher can say from the pulpit.

It was a kind of bribe.

This kind of donor exemption did not exist in the past. The carve-out made it tempting.

Some churches have sworn it off.

TECHNICALLY, there’s probably still room for much biblical church activity and 501c(3) for the immediate future. And if I were a pastor I’d probably not want to name any candidate anyhow, lest glory be stolen from the Lord. My church would never be a “Church of Ted Cruz” for example. But I’d hold up as example a lot of God-inspired qualities that, say, Ted Cruz would pass with flying colors and, say, Hillary Clinton wouldn’t, and give my audience enough credit to have good sense to put two and two together.
