More Bay Area Police Departments Interested In Getting ‘Stingray’
KPIX CBS ^ | 11/14/4 | Christin Ayers

It’s called a Stingray: A cellphone surveillance device so top secret, law enforcement agencies don’t even like to admit they have it. But KPIX 5 has confirmed Oakland, San Francisco and San Jose police are using Stingrays to track suspects.

Now, Fremont Police and the Alameda County District Attorney’s office are applying for federal grants to get a new version of Stingray, called Hailstorm. The use of the devices is increasing, potentially at the expense of your privacy.

You may think you are private when you’re talking on your cell phone, think again. From an undercover car or even strapped to a detective’s chest walking down the street, police are using a device called a Stingray to gather the serial numbers of surrounding phones.

They’re chasing a target, but sweeping up your identity, activity and location as well.

I don’t blame you at all. We all do what we can to protect ourselves.

In fact it is rather hard if they weren’t tracked by police at the time.
Yet it is not impossible if the cell company keeps logs of phones getting hooked to their base stations.

“The use of the devices is increasing, potentially at the expense of your privacy.”...

Well, if you have nothing to hide, what’s the big problem? I could careless if they know about my trips to the grocery store or calling for a pizza of Saturday night. I have broken no laws and will be more than happy to allow them to hear what I say. On the other hand, if I were one who is conducting illegal business (drug selling for example), go for it.

Following this same logic you have to agree with unwarranted searches and so on.
It is not that freedom-loving people have to opt for.

First time I saw that was on the old TV show "Combat", where the krauts were monitoring Vic Morrow's radio transmissions and triangulating in the same manner.

“We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.” Barack Hussein Obama, 7/2/2008
They don’t call it a Civil Defense force, that would imply we need (or perhaps that we deserve) defense. The official name is National Civilian Community Corps.

I think of it as the NatCCC, or more simply, as the NatCs...

Don't get me wrong, my post wasn't intended to excuse such a thing as ordinary or unsophisticated, "what's the big deal".

To the contrary, I'd observe that it's really quite easily done. Matter of fact, anybody else with some reallynotallthatsophisticated electronic equipment and what, let's say a couple of hour's worth of training would be able to do the same.

Maybe someone who doesn't like me or you.

Now that I think about it, really the hot setup for something like this would be a really cool TV truck with one of those telescoping elliptical dishes on it.

Hidden in plain sight, and most effective. All it takes is a little money and it would only take three of them at the most to track someone down within a meter or two.

Don’t get me wrong, I agree with you, but you said “krauts” and I just wanted to work “NatCs” into the conversation...

"Well, if you have nothing to hide, what’s the big problem? "

If you're looking for a job do you want your boss to know? How about the secret Christmas gifts you buy - do you want those on the internet? Planning a surprise party?

Would you like your bank balances published on Facebook? Credit scores?

Prescriptions medicines? Vacation plans and when your house will be vacant? And on and on...

Privacy is an important element of freedom.
