Richard Overton, America's oldest living veteran, participated in the Veterans Day parade in Austin, Texas, on Tuesday, posing for selfies from the passenger seat of a slow-moving car along the parade route.

Chances are, the 108-year-old World War II veteran began the day like any other: on the porch, smoking a cigar, sipping a cup of coffee stiffened with whiskey.

I know many people half his age who are not as fit as he appears to be. Good for him!

I’d be thrilled just to live that long.

TIme has a way of altering our perspectives doesn’t it.

Appropriately enough, The Grand Old Rag by Billy Murray was, arguably, the bestselling record on May 11, 1906, the day he was born.

“….on the porch, smoking a cigar, sipping a cup of coffee stiffened with whiskey.”

So why am I spending all this money on various medications when all it takes is a little Jack Daniels and a Cohiba every day? I wonder if they would be covered by Medicare?

I was struck by the bars on the windows and door of his house. Where does the poor man live? His house looks really nice but the bars are a shame. The generation that fought for true freedom have to live like prisoners in their own country.

It’s weird. Medical science can save lives and even extend lives. But sometimes...I’m not so sure.

Some long-lived folks appear indestructible to the abuse they’ve brought on themselves. Others are gone long before their time from illness they did not bring upon themselves.

It is my hope that I live to be a hale and healthy 100—at the least!—and that all FReeperdom may live to enjoy the same. However they can manage it!

For a nominal cost on your part, I’ll deliver the necessary cigars and booze to keep you smiling for as long as you might live. The petite Japanese feet to walk on your aching back and cure lumbago are extra.
