Old Crow Ping

Happy Veteran's Day to my fellow veterans.

A thought for Veteran's Day from an Old Crow

For those who are not familiar with the term, 'Old Grow'. From Wikipedia, "The name 'Old Crows' emerged from the first use of electronic warfare in World War II to disrupt Axis communications and radars. Allied equipment and operators were known by the code name 'Raven'. Common jargon changed the name to 'Crows' and those engaged in the profession became known as 'Old Crows'." This became the discipline of Electronic Warfare and the Old Crows were those who practiced it. The term has been extended to include Information Warfare.

Not everyone who serves serves in time of war. Only a relative few of our veterans have seen combat. Thank God for that. The primary mission of the Armed Forces in peacetime is to be ready for combat should they be called upon.

You can not keep all of the Armed Forces honed to a fine edge and on high alert at all time. It is prohibitively expensive and destructive of the very capability you are trying to create. Therefore, some stand watch while others rest and train. The Old Crows keep the electronic watch on potential opponents communications and other electronic emissions. As such they are intimately connected to the Intelligence Community.

An early radar detected the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor 55 minutes before the first shot was fired. Had the warning been understood and acted upon the Japanese attack would have had a very different outcome. The Old Crows are determined to see that type of mistake never happens on our watch.

Veterans, and especially combat veterans, are a closed mouthed lot. Some of us can't talk about what we did, and do. That's all right. We knew that going in. We understand and accept the need for silence.

The combat types have movies made about their actions. They rely the briefings they get from us before action. Almost by definition, combat is stressful. There is a different, but very real, self-imposed stress on those who provide the information the commanders and troops act on. If we screw up, others die instead of us. People die in combat. We know that; they know that. We can only wonder if there was something else we could have done that might have saved lives.

I don't want this construed as some sort of 'Hey look at me, I'm a hero too.' post. I'm not. My uncles in WWII were. One Navy Cross, two Silver Stars, four Bronze Stars, and five or six Purple Hearts between the three of them. The purpose of the post is to inform our non-military FReepers about some service members they may never heard of (good).
