For Sale: Renovated Luxury Condo; Can Survive Nuclear Attack
WSJ ^ | 9 Nov 2014 | LIZ MOYER

Affluent buyers worried about doomsday are snapping up well-appointed bunkers built in a former missile silo.

When Tyler Allen agreed to fork over $3 million in cash for a luxury condominium near Concordia, Kan., he wasn’t attracted by the indoor swimming pool, 17-seat movie theater, or hydroponic vegetable garden.

The real selling point of the 1,820-square-foot apartment: It will be buried 174 feet underground in a decommissioned missile silo sturdy enough to withstand a nuclear attack.

Mr. Allen, a 45-year-old Orlando, Fla., sports bar and nightclub owner, insists he isn’t a “tinfoil hat-wearing” type preparing for the end of the world.

Rather, he cites growing security threats—such as a global health pandemic, cataclysmic weather and terror attacks.

“There’s a Camp David for the president,” he says. “If you’re at a certain level where you can afford it, you can get that, too.”

The so-called Survival Condo complex boasts full and half-floor units that cost $1.5 million to $3 million each. The building can accommodate up to 75 people, and buyers include doctors, scientists and entrepreneurs, says developer Larry Hall...

Wait a second...isn’t this where some envirokooks are planning to create a virus that will wipe out the rest of the world only to be stopped by a special multi-national team of counter terrorist special forces?

I am pretty much certain it could survive nuclear disaster such as a direct hit from a nuclear bomb.

It could not come close to surviving a direct hit. It would be completely destroyed.

A direct hit is less likely than a virus coming along. Spanish Flu killed 2% of the world population in 1918.

The problem Mr. Allen will have is when to “bug out” & how to get to Kansas.

Nuclear war could happen very quickly - a matter of hours. Civilian & commercial aviation might not be safe or even allowed. Driving from Orlando to Kansas could be a nightmare of limited fuel, martial law, & dangerously desperate people along the way.

Natural disasters aren't much different. If Yellowstone explodes tomorrow, there is little chance Allen will get to Kansas. That would NOT be the direction to head for safety. If a 200 ft. tsunami is headed for Florida, flying away is probably the only way to save yourself & family, yet Allen may have to wait in line to take off at any airport. The ground crews & air traffic controllers might have ideas of escape themselves, so he can't count on them to ready his escape plane.

Then there is the dilemma of WHEN to head to safety. Back when we had hurricanes, I faced this problem numerous times. If you leave too late, traffic & circumstances could foil your plan. If you leave too early, you leave your property to the thieves & you risk wasting time & money on what turned out to be nothing. The urge to wait a while longer is great. So is the urge to stay put & ride out the storm.

Mass panic has a way of spoiling the best of plans. Traveling 1400 miles to safety doesn't seem like such a good plan.
