Two Midterm Elections Have Hollowed Out The Democratic Party
Washington Post ^ | 11/08/2014 | Dan Balz

The more serious problem for Democrats is the drubbing they’ve taken in the states, the breeding ground for future national talent and for policy experimentation. Republicans have unified control — the governorship and the legislature — in 23 states, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Democrats control just seven. Democrats hold 18 governorships, but only a handful are in the most populous states.

In California, Gov. Jerry Brown won again at age 76, his fourth, non-consecutive term in the governor’s office. His victory means that younger Democrats will have to wait until 2018 to compete for one of the nation’s most high-profile political jobs. In New York, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo won a second term, but can’t get out of Clinton’s shadow. The only other state among the top 10 in population held by the Democrats is Pennsylvania, newly won by Tom Wolf.

Meanwhile, Republicans control governorships in Florida, Texas, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Georgia and Massachusetts. Democrats were hoping to knock off Republicans Scott Walker in Wisconsin, Rick Scott in Florida and Rick Snyder in Michigan. All survived. In Ohio, John Kasich won by the second-largest margin in state history, thanks in part to the implosion of his Democratic opponent.

snip...

But a political party cannot be constructed around two individuals (Obama and Clinton), as Democrats seem to be today. Winning the presidency and taking back the Senate will be the Democrats’ top priorities in the next two years. The bigger challenge of rebuilding the party in the states and nurturing a new generation of leaders should be just as urgent.

Yet with this implosion Obama is twice elected. It still boggles the mind.

Not really; Romney was a terrible candidate, a Democrat in everything other than the (R), and McCain pulled for the bailout.
IOW, the stuff the Republican party has been offering has been very much along the same lines as the Democrats; they either have no vision or share the Democrat's.

Yup. Romney wasn’t running as a conservative.

He never really laid a glove on Obama.

When I saw that during the presidential debates, I should have known the election was lost.

“I think in the long term, the Democrats will have a “White Flight” problem. Whites are leaving the Democrat party in the South, and this will spread across the US. Democrats have long promoted “diversity” and Affirmative Action. This identity politics has made the White middle class Democrats feel unwelcome.”

Very true. Whites are now a BLOCK VOTE, 75/25 (at least) in the South, and there A LOT of us. Hispanics are splitting their votes almost 50/50, at least outside of California and the Northeast.

The Dems are left with the black vote (90/10), fighting to get just a majority of the Hispanic vote, and being annihilated by the white vote in the South. It’s over for them in the South, and if the whites firm-up as a block vote elsewhere, we’re looking at Reagan-style blowouts in the future.

Unfortunately the Democrat Party isn’t hollowed out far enough. A lot more work needs to be done.

It’s not enough. Those rat swine should have less than a third of Congress, and less than a 4th of legislatures.

We’d be pretty close to 2/3 in the Senate if not for every bungled and stolen race.

Reagan was half-way through his second term by the time he was 76.

Bill Clinton’s talking member, the old neo-socialist hag will revive the party. Run Hillaryous, run. (Although there’s talk about about a middle-aged, neo-socialist, Franken running. Put Feinstein as veep and the Frankenstein ticket can’t be beat…especially that soon after Halloween in 2016)

Something has hollowed out the souls of the democrats IMO.

What's that old saying? A liberal's a liberal until it gets mugged?

Obamas been mugging the hell out of everybody and democrats finally noticed they were bleeding like everyone else.

Kind of a hollow victory, since the punk POTUS has decided to leglislate via EO, and had decided to break his oath of office to uphold the constitution.

Theres a truth in your statement that you may not have even realized.Obama wants his legacy to be exclusively for the Democratic party. I don’t think thats been discussed in the numerous article about his legacy in the post election period.

Yes!

He kicks 'em where it really hurts and gets away with it.

It also tells me that Scott Walker has the right idea to defund the unions.

You are an astute observer, my friend. Scott Walker is the one and only landslide-electable Repub candidate for pres in 2016. He da man!

You are two astute observers. Walker walks the walk.

Policy experimentation?

New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo won a second term......running TV ads using millions of dollars he stole as head of HUD....

Cuomo Says Obama’s Woes Hurt Democrats in New York Races

BUT IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE MIDTERM DEM BLOODBATH, HOUSE DEM CHAIR STEVE ISRAEL QUIT---AND SLAPPED-DOWN CUOMO... Israel suggested, Cuomo could have done more to help Democrats running in New York.

“We had conversations several months ago with the governor’s staff about helping to organize and coordinate a campaign and I didn’t see the fruition to those conversations,” Israel told The New York Times.

===============================================

It was instructive that abortion-worshipper Cuomo was given virtually no airtime on NY broadcast TV. One brief shot showed his live-in---Braless Chef Sandra---hanging over his shoulder, straining to gain attention for herself.

Heh---history repeats itself---that's what broke up his marriage to a Kennedy---not showing enough deference to His Majesty.
