The atmosphere is preparing to send part of the polar vortex southward toward the US next week with an outbreak of arctic air and lake-effect snow.
The polar vortex is a large pocket of very cold air, typically the coldest air in the Northern Hemisphere, which sits over the polar region.
Occasionally, this pocket of very cold air can get dislodged farther south than normal, leading to cold outbreaks in Canada and the US.
The main blast of cold air associated with the plunging polar vortex will swing southeastward into the Central and Eastern states spanning Sunday, Nov. 9, to Friday, Nov. 14, 2014.
According to AccuWeather Long Range Expert Paul Pastelok, "Areas from the northern and central Plains to the Great Lakes, the upper Gulf Coast and the Appalachians will feel significant impact from the arctic outbreak."
The worst of the cold will be felt from Fargo, North Dakota, and Minneapolis to Chicago, St. Louis, and Cincinnati, where heating demands will jump and people will be reaching for winter coats before venturing outdoors.

A. Gore will no doubt be updating the causes category, as it appears that Global Climate Change causes democrat electoral dysfunction...
Algore and his lunacy (global warming) share a parasitic symbiotic relationship.
It’s been such a beautiful autumn in NE OH that it seems like we’re due for mother nature to make us pay.
Hope it wipes out Minnesota, New York City, Chicago, much of New Jersey, Philadelphia and Baltimore. Now, “that is climate change I can live with”.
Go, Snow, Go!
Soon to follow:
Since when has a cold snap been called a "polar vortex?"
Is this new terminology invented to scare people, or is it uncommon terminology brought out recently to better explain cold snaps?
Time to build more snow fence. ;-)
LOL. We build hurricane fences. Everything in your yard blows against the fence...sometimes, parts of your house too.
Those Luddites have no idea what a vortex is. Liberals are such idiots.
Interesting! We probably don’t have to build snow fence to as much wind load as that of hurricane fences. 110 mph tops here, so far (about one night per winter). Many days 60-80 mph winds spraying the ice from peaks just to the west, though. Wind at the same speed isn’t nearly as bad up here, either, with the lower pressure and all (over 9,000 feet elev. here on the CO Rockies with no trees between here and some peaks about 4 miles upwind).
I sat through the middle of Hurricane Celia in 1970. Wouldn’t want to do that again. ;-)
ping!
Cold weather = global warming. The science is settled.
You should go to work for Tom Steyer. You could have saved him $100 million...lol.
LOL!
