The NYPDs highest-ranking black official abruptly quit Friday instead of taking a new post, a surprising move that caught city officials off guard at a time when the department is trying to mend relationships with minority communities.
Chief Philip Banks III was to have been named first deputy commissioner, second in command at the nations largest police force. Commissioner William Bratton already had announced the change and Banks was to have been promoted Monday. Instead, he will retire.

The guy likely realizes that NYC is LOST! and he needs to withdraw.
Sharpton is so confused. He’s in the middle of a self made protest and he would look ooooh so cool if he was a 1 PP protesting this guys forced retirement /s
Maybe he retired to write a book like the Official who was chasing the white guy snipers in the beltway.
He found out that he had to report to Sharpton!
They must have a good pension otherwise I can’t see why any cop stays on.
Who’s this William Bratton guy? I thought Tom Selleck was the commissioner. They keep showing him on t.v.
Threats from his homies for "actin' white"?

A black guy quit...is he a racist somehow?
That depends on how the newspapers wish to portray him. My guess is that he’ll be a positioned as a martyr on the front pages tomorrow.
Has the UN been informed of this?!?
I’ve heard that the position is a ‘civilian’ position that would take him out of the ‘day to day action of the dept.’
My first thought was that a skeleton peeked from the closet door and they decided it was best to close said door quietly and quickly...
