Why Cat-Calling Really Is a Problem
National Review ^ | October 30, 2014 | Christine Sisto

A new video about street harassment has gone viral and it proves that . . . how do I put this? It proves that I was right.

The video, released by the nonprofit anti-street-harassment organization Hollaback, features a moderately attractive woman, Shoshana Roberts, wearing jeans and a T-shirt, walking in silence through Manhattan for ten hours. The trek was recorded on a hidden video camera, carried by Roberts’s boyfriend, who walked in front of her. The camera picked up over 100 instances of street harassment in one day, according to the group, ranging in severity from men shouting “good morning,” and “how you doing today?” to men following her for several minutes, walking uncomfortably close.

I had 35 of them. They were superb in their knowledge and skills - probably within the top 1-2%, but were seriously challenged in other respects. I spent most of my time dealing with egos, misimpressions and undue expectations.

My biggest concern was letting them get in front of a sponsor unscreened beforehand.

I would call that the second most egregious point of dishonesty about this video. LOL

I would expand that to Latin custom. If she walked around a major Latin American city there would be more than 108 “incidents”.

When the people one is managing are smart enough to know that they can’t be wrong, yes, that can be a problem...

catcall
A loud whistle or a comment of a sexual nature made by a man to a passing woman.

I do agree with this, your likelihood of dealing with this is directly proportional to the odds the Male grew up without a father or father figure in the home/by a single mom... and guess what? One minority can proudly own that statistic lock stock and barrel, and not surprising, that’s the minority seen making the overwhelming number of incidents in this video.

It wouldn’t matter which city this gal was in, if she walked down a block primarily populated by those folks she’s going to likely deal with it in any city, particularly if the city is north of the Mason/Dixon Line.

Yeah, saying good morning or how are you to a member of the opposite sex is harassment.

It's more in HOW it is said than WHAT is being said.

For instance, if you met me on the street and looked me in the eye with a nice smile and said, "Good morning!", then I'd reply in kind.

But if you leered at me, looked me up and down, grabbed at yourself, and then said 'Good morning' like some sleezeball then you'd be spending the rest of the day trying to get your testicles back down from your throat.

Being ‘smart’ and knowing how and when to apply that are two very different things. Rote education and ability without some sense is a very dangerous thing. Especially in our government when credentials and ideology trump sense.

They really need to get over the the whole “war on women” thing. Some people are !@#$%^&s, we know this, it’s unfortunate. Yes !@#$%^&s tend to pick on women more, because women are less likely to punch them in the face, also unfortunate. Doesn’t mean society has it in for women, it just means math, share a country with 311 million you can pretty much guarantee there’s a bunch you’d rather not.

“Am I to understand that saying “good morning” is harassment?”

So, I’m guessing...

“Uhmm, you smell good today.”

...would be considered harassment even if she’s wearing $200/ounce perfume.

And that is why she brags about her DD boobs on her website.

She’s an actress looking to be noticed and get work. Nothing wrong with that, if she used this as advertizing instead of trying to manufacture some kind of fake outrage it would have been fine.

Another odd thing - how many Caucasian men to you see making comments on the video? Is this some kind of rassist thing or what?

First who is this writer to declare that the person who walked the streets for 10 hours is “ a moderately attractive woman”? How does she judge another’s beauty?

Once again the author seems to ignore race. This woman's let us say voluptuous body is very attractive with NAM males.

She painted on her clothes and was incensed when men noticed? *sigh* I’m sorry but as a woman even I think this is incredibly lame but lib women will swoon over “the proof”. What I don’t understand is why they aren’t enjoying their sexual revolution. Being a lady is passe and everyone can and should be be a.............well, you know. They’re reaping the rewards and complaining.

This, bullying, and saying god bless you to someone who sneezes rank up there as things I don’t want elected officials placing high priorities on.

You’re right - most of the comments were not offensive in any way. Also, she made it a point of ignoring all comments entirely - which probably invited some of the “extra attention” she got from the idiots who may have seen this as a “challenge”.

You’d think in 10 hours of walking there would have been at least a few really obnoxious remarks, clearly sexual in nature, etc - yet there are none, and I’m sure we would have heard them if they were made.
